I'm finally building my PC replacement of my dual G5 2GHz... that I sold to a friend of mine...

$2100 (prolly more like $2500 with more things... case, firewire card, mouse, keyboard)

400 - Athlon64 3800 (dualcore 2GHz)
500 - 4 GB ram
500 - four 250GB drives
400 - 7800GT video card
200 - motherboard
100 - DVD burner

I'm mostly doing this so I can do more 3d type work and play some games... so the video card may swap out to a workstation type OpenGL card, not sure yet. I still have my mac Mini for my OS X fix. Kinda scared to sink big money into another G5 before the switch.

I wanted to build a dual dualcore opteron, but the opterons are $850 each.

Anyway, it's easy to see why Apple will hopefully warm to doing things with AMD... they seem to be building some pretty cool stuff. The Athlon64 3800 at 2GHz uses less power than a single P4 and outperforms the dualcore P4 at 2.8GHz.

----

Anyway with the desire to do more 3d stuff and I just want to wait out the switch to Intel (I've been using Macs since they ran at 20MHz) the above for $2500 is pretty impressive. This is why people will want to be able to run OS X on "beige box" computers. The hardware freedom.

When doing my "heavy" work, I will surely miss things like OS X's superior multitasking and memory utilization, but I'll be back.

It will be interesting to see how the above box compares to my sold dual G5 2GHz. I used it for a year, it was a great computer...

What!?!? only one 7800? You can't get 1000fps without two of those on an SLI mobo.... Just kidding, that looks like an awsome rig.

7800... Now there's a card that gives the PowerMacs a reason for PCI-Express (hopefully with SLI support too)!

What exactly is SLI anyway? I hear and read the term sometimes, but is it new, or something I've been completely oblivious to?

Think of it as dual processing for video cards. Harnessing the power of two video cards on the same bus (PCIe in this case) and utilizing them simultaneously for a sometimes significant speed boost.

As with most things nVidia has worth bragging about, SLI too was stolen from 3dfx.

Basic concept is that one card renders one half of the screen, while the other card renders the other half. Of course, the cards have to be linked with a high-speed bus. 1+1=2 and thus SLI.
