what's the best way to burn an AVI to play on a normal dvd player?

1 hour later dvd is done, and the menu works but no video just a green screen. any suggestions?

macfantn, your symptoms indicate iDVD didn't translate from the codec used. Since iDVD comes from Apple, it probably depends on QuickTime for it's internal conversions.
Try to play your avi file in QT. If it doesn't play, install perian. If it plays afterwards, then try the iDVD route again. Perian solves a lot of compatibility problems for QuickTime.

You can also try undercutting iDVD's encoding problem by exporting to mp4 first, with for example QTAmateur (or QT Pro if you have it). Use a high bitrate, since the final size won't matter anyway.
