Trade it in for something else? Why do people seem to love being in debt? Pisses me off.

Seriously. If you're already used to living without needing that money, put it into savings or paying off other debt. It's like it doesn't even cross people's minds to keep the car. Drive it for another 5 years.

Sock away the amount you were forking over every month for your car payment and use it to pay cash for your next car.

Quoted for truthiness.

I did that last year after paying off my passat and have a nice savings built up along with a sizable car fund for when I need to unload the VW (which is looking to be sooner rather than later).

+1

Also, the OP would likely have better luck with his late-model Honda. He's got a good 140K left in it before he has to do much at all.

Then again, beer is good too!

Pocket the extra cash and drive it till it drops. Our Maxima has over 330k on it, and we appreciate not making payments on it for several years now. And I appreciate the good beer in my fridge.

Awesome! Congratulations, first of all. It's a great feeling.

Also...a Civic with only 72,000 miles? Drive that bad boy til 150,000 and save tons of money! Two of my first three cars were Civics, and each lasted around the 175,000 mark before I finally traded them off. I know for sure that one of them is still running, and I haven't owned it for six years.

1. refinance the car

2. use the proceed to buy AAPL.

3. refinance the AAPL shares

4. use the proceed to buy put option on GOOG.

Repeat step 1-4 until net asset = 0

Oh, I agree that it's a sensible thing to do if you know what you're doing. But how many peeps fall into that category?

My truck is paid off next month and the only thing I am looking forward to is driving it until it catches on fire and pocketing the 300 dollars every month.

Sek and the OP: To be honest guys, I'd use half to pay down debts and put half into the rainy day fund. There's some real rainy days ahead.

My loan payments are only a bit over a hundred a month, so I plan on putting the rest away.

Rainy days have been present for the last two years. My savings have dwindled, but a lot of new work is on the horizon for us. Still, the construction industry is known for its quick ups and downs.

The last thing I'd do right now is accrue more debt.

At 75K, a Civic that's been taken care of is in its prime. Keep it. Enjoy your ability to NOT make payments on something that works.

The only reason I traded in the Civic I had before my current one was that the dealer had the car I'd "always wanted," a Civic sedan in blue for a ludicrously great price. Otherwise, my 2002 Coupe would be in the garage instead of the sedan.

Hey, in defesne of the Liberty, it DOES only have 50k on it, and I haven't had a single real problem with it yet. Its completely loaded, moonroof, power everything, heated leather seats. Its really not that bad of a ride at all. The 14-18mpg SUCKS though! Plus I was more interested in getting something "different". I've had it for three years and I've just gotten bored and want something different. And I'd also like to get something different before something DOES go wrong with it. But yes, please, by all means, entertain yourselves and rip away on it.

That's really quite good. I get 12-14mpg. And that's with proper man-sized gallons, not those little things you have in the colonies.

Do you still have the marine-diesel powered Jeep? Or do you have something V8 based now.

Yes and yes. Those figures referring to the V8 Grand Cherokee.
