I am going to dj a friends party and want to make a custom playlist something a little more than I can do iTunes. Possibly fade in/fade out and mix 2 songs together.

If that's all you want to do for a couple of songs, you could just merge the tracks in Garageband.

For simple fading in/out of songs for parties (not real dj'ing), I use a program called Disco LT. It's a small, easy to use version of a program called Disco XT. It had less features than the full version, but still did enough for small parties for a cheap price (I think it was around $20 or so.) Unfortunately, the company apparently does not make the cheap version any longer, and now has only the full version for $139.

Disco XT - DJ Software for Mac and Windows

(Their website isn't much, as you can see....)

Simple: DJay. I'm no dj, but I found it very simple to use.
Besides being able to mix like a pro, you can, if you want use Automix to have the computer mix for you: make a playlist select the first song, activate automix and party!
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

One of the main developers has been a DJ for 15 years and in my opinion, it shows. You can couple the program to a DJ controller. Vestax has released a cheap controller specifically for sale with DJay.
