I can understand super-nerds camping out for consoles, but camping out for Windows is pure nihilism.

It must be pretty bad when you have nothing else to do but stand at a Walmart and wait for an operating system to come out.

It's not even something that will be low in supply. They just have to make disks and stick them in boxes.

C'mon people... If you had been stuck with 10.1 for the last four years and Tiger or even Panther were coming out, you don't think you would be chomping at the bit to get a copy?

If I had used Win ME I would have switched to OS 9 for the rest of my life and been happy.

Luckily I switched when Win95 was still the thing.

There were about 15 people in front of Best Buy this morning right before it opened. I was needing to pick something up, so I just watched them from my car. They tried to get the door to open before the employee finished rolling up the metal gate.

For some reason I thought that picture of Salty was Mindfad. I had to look at it for a few seconds to realize who it was.

Pff, what a bunch of losers.

I mean, come on, they should get a life and hang out at MacNN 24/7 and bicker about any- and everything.

You're laughing now, but just WAIT until the iPhone is released. Oh. My. God. That WILL be madness. Guaranteed.

But waiting in line for Vista? Seriously? That's like waiting in line the day before McDonalds released their "all white meat" chicken nuggets or waiting for the next generation chia pet outside of Walgreens before they open at 7am (unless it's a 24 hour location, of course). Like someone said earlier... it's not like buying a Wii, PS3, or iPhone... it's a box with a disc in it. They'll have PLENTY of supply within the next week.

This whole camping out crap for consumer goods is just getting stupid.

When did this paradigm shift happen? It really seems that nowadays, it is expected and planned that lines will be created days and weeks before something as trivial as a game system, doll or movie tickets are released. Plus, the retailers and manufacturers seem to take this as expected and encouraged behavior.

Camping out for something that you’ll be able to buy regularly in a few weeks, tops, is just ridiculous.

I’ve camped out exactly once in my life: when they opened a new Apple Centre here in Copenhagen, and they had tons of amazing (but very limited) offers. Well, ‘camped out’—we got there at around 6:30 AM, the store opening at 10 AM. We managed to get one of the lower-profile offers, a MacBook about $400 off (some of the best ones were MacBook Pros and Mac Pros at about $1,000 off!). If we hadn’t spent those four hours there, we’d have had to pay an extra $400; that, in my book, is worth waiting a bit for. Just to get something first isn’t.

We were at Costco last night and as we walked in there was a display area with boxes of Vista...next to boxes of the iPod (video) and Nano. Two people were buying the iPod video and no one was even looking at the Vista.

1) Didn't the stores open at 12 am for Vista sales?
2) Didn't the stores offer free swag just for showing up? I note that some people went just for the swag, without any intention of getting Vista at all.
3) I camped out for the opening of the first Apple Store in Canada. Oh wait, no I didn't. I did go the next day though and when I saw the line was too long, I just went for a coffee and then shopping elsewhere for a little while before I came back.

Hi turtle:

Thank you.

I think the Apple Era is here to stay, what we all wished for over the years, and Jobs is responsible for it. He's a true American success story. Microsoft had their time and now it's Apple's turn.

I wonder if hookers have figured out how much business they could get if they started hanging around these geek camp-outs. If people are that desperate for Windows, imagine how desperate they must be for girls.

Welcome back Cody. I hope everything is well. I look forward to our chats. JOKING!!! Seriously, it's good to see you back.

I went to a Meijer store (24 hour all-in-one-like-a-wal-mart) to pick up a copy of Pink Floyd's Pulse. There were a few people there as well, but I think they had just woken up.
