Do we have a rough ETA on new hardware coming for it? If I buy one, it will be a LONG while before I'm allowed to by another and I can wait for a while if it won't be too long. ;-)

Thanks!

Hard to tell at this point, since there is no reference for the iPad's updated cycle. But most people are expecting a yearly cycle, much like the iPhone.

If it's a yearly cycle we're roughly half-way through, right? Honestly, I'd stick it out.

I'd wait for a 2.0 iPad, though the 1.0 iPad seems like a more polished product than the 1.0 iPhone. Probably because of a more mature iOS.

I'd wait if I were you. Personally I find the iPad screen at 132 ppi to be a little grainy. As far as hand-held devices go it's about the worst there is in terms of pixel density. Let's hope they rectify that in the next iteration.

I'd expect a new announcement in very early January around CES time, and shipping a few months later. I really want an iPad at the moment, but I'm gonna hold off.

January is only a few months away, why don't you just wait for Macworld?

When the iPad gets the retina display it will make the v1.0 model look hugely outdated. A camera would be nice too. I'd hang out for a Jan announce, but I expect rumours will start surfacing soon. Apples not as leak proof as it used to be so we should start getting heads ups any week now regarding any updates.

Wouldn't it take a considerable amount of resources to drive a retina display on an iPad. My rough calculation indicates it would be around 2500 x 1900 pixels.

IDK, there are 7" 4:3 tablets coming out now that have nearly the same pixel density as the iPhone 4.

Apple wouldn't do weird ratios.

They'd double (quadruple) to 2048 X 1536.

I had nothing worthwhile to contribute so I thought I'd post something attacking the OP. The mods were less than pleased.

My advice is to get an iPad now, and trade up for the iPad 2 when it comes along. Apple devices generally hold their value quite well - I generally spend no more than $200 upgrading my devices, when taking into account how much I sold the old ones for on Craigslist.

I agree that the Retina display is coming to the iPad and it's going to make the current one look downright awful. I can't wait though, iPad 2 launch day will be one of the few times that I buy a rev 1 product, on launch day no less. Then again, I got an iPad 1 on launch day too. No regrets!

The one thing I'd adore on the iPad is BlindType typing technology. I hope Apple adopts something like it.

Never heard of it before.

That's very, very cool.

Unfortunately, Google just bought them, and patents will ensure that Apple would have to license from Google for anything similar. Yeah, right.

Why do you need your wife's permission to buy one? ( Just sayin' ).

If you can wait tho, you *might* want to leave it 'til next Spring (or before if Apple do a rev. spec )

Let what drop? Why (yes, open question) do ppl enforce an opinion (by keeping it going), but always word the ending of their sentence with how 'other ppl' should stop?

Strong democratic discussion.

For the benefit of the particularly dense:

Private enterprise is not democracy (MacNN is a private enterprise).

Neither, BTW, is a relationship.

When your interaction with "partners" is surfing porn, it's easy to imagine that sharing a life with someone is all about you.

In the world of dealing with real people, however, compromises include putting $500 investments on a common priority list. When your kid desperately needs a new bed, anybody who spends that money on an iPad instead has a real problem.

"Permission", btw, is somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

Also, you may note that YOUR post wasn't censored, as it was perfectly fine.

Aameiel came barging in here with some rather offensive - and amazingly stupid - stuff to say, and nothing else to contribute to the subject of this thread.

His post was edited.

I'd hoped I could preserve it as a shining example of how evolution sometimes completely fails to ensure viable lifeforms, but unfortunately, Mod Powars decided to edit the quote in my post, too.

Nice opening line "particularly dense" (again, subjective). This serves as a double edged mechanic. If challenged, it can be written off as "not directed at you" (you, in the personal or general sense depending on how the poster wishes to proceed). If ignored, a poster can sit smugly in the knowledge he has 'won out'. Childish, none the less.

I'm surprised as the majority of private enterprises do entertain some working of freedom of speech without the need for censorship. This is a pubic web forum after all and not the inner workings of Government or some security facility that requires NDA's for all it's 'personnel'. Simply put, Aameiel's comments were not aggressive (although once again, perception is key).

Correct.

No-one mentioned porn. (Yes, I know you were making comparisons). Another example of a backhanded put down. I guess I'll show my g/f this thread and ask her to move out so it's sits better with your theory. Nice try.

Given that the majority here (and on most forums, save a few teenagers who have yet to experience 'real life), that's a given. Captain Obvious to the rescue.

It is. But it is also a truthful statement for some (no tongue/cheek required) that permission WAS given (no, not from my own experience but I have seen a few friends go down this road). Only the OP knows which applies to him.

I have seen a lot of BS posts in various forms on many different forums. To say his post (and I did read it) was "amazingly stupid", by the same token it was amazingly stupid to take it too seriously. One thing that was correct about his post, is that too many men these days just aren't men. It's too easy to be a keyboard commando (I know ppl will say that applies to me, given my replies here), but it does take one to know one (in more ways than one, right?).

Political correctness 4tw.

I'm sure there will be a comeback of sorts, either to rip what I have said or simply say "move on, nothing to see here". Either way, another example as to why a free form web forum (which MacNN used to be), is dying.

Peace.
