Does any body have an idea why I cannot connect to photo stream? I was capable of doing this in the past, went out for four weeks, come back home, want to show off some African safari photo's via Apple TV on the big screen, comes iPhoto with this strange message. I can't find a solution.
Anyone? Thanks!

What "strange message"? Have you tried manually adding photos to Photo Stream (drag them to Photo Stream on the left in iPhoto)? Remember that photos normally only stay on Photo Stream for 30 days, so to stream older ones, you have to manually drag them over.

I assumed "iPhoto was unable to connect to PhotoStream" was the strange message.

I would like to hear a meaningful answer to this, too. The "unable to connect" error message is plaguing me, too. I haven't changed anything and yet suddenly my Mac can't access Photo Stream. I can't even find a dialogue box to investigate if my iCloud / Photo Stream password has been mysteriously lost. I can access iCloud without issue, but Photo stream will not connect to my Mac.

Well, I had to go to the trouble of signing out of iCloud altogether and signing back in. That solved it.

It all seems to have worked perfectly - didn't lose anything except all the photos in Photo Stream were deleted - no big deal, I treat that as temporary storage / cute luxury feature (and I can drag any photos I want back into Photo Stream).

I noticed that my e-mail address in the iCloud account status window changed to @iCloud.com from @me.com, so perhaps that was the cause of the issue. Somewhat annoying.
