After many patient years, my old beige G3 at home is on it's last legs and it's time to be replaced.

I use a G4 at work most of the time for graphic design and video editing and can't wait to be able to do it at home!

I have my prescious pennies saved up but now it's a matter of where do I get it from?

I want to avoid the apple store here in NYC because of the sales tax ($250?!), so I'm interested in purchasing online.

I see that MacMall is offering a "free" (w/rebate) GB of RAM which is enticing...

Any advice or better options for e-tailers? I'm eager to get my order in!

Thanks in advance.

I have ordered two or three computers from macmall.
They are ok to do business with. No problems with them.
With the extras they give it is worth it to buy from them.
The ram is a huge cost savings and you would not regret it.
You will have to pay a installation fee and shipping which would still be less than sales tax.
Good luck and congrats in advance when you get it.
Which model are you going to get?
Have a great day!

I'm getting the Dual 2.5

Dual 2.5GHz PowerPC G5
1.25GHz frontside bus/processor
512K L2 cache/processor
512MB DDR400 SDRAM
Expandable to 8GB SDRAM
160GB Serial ATA
8x SuperDrive
Three PCI-X Slots
ATI Radeon 9600 XT
128MB DDR video memory
56K internal modem

And I'll get the extra GB of RAM and potentially more later.

This will be such a rocket boost from what I have now that my mind reels!

I'll just be excited to be edting video at home for a start. All the Flash and After Effects stuff can come later, heh heh.

Unless you really need the free ram upgrade which is only another 512MB chip and you would be charged for installation (according to one other poster) I would recommend getting it from Amazon.
Amazon offers free tax and free shipping for most states. I have never had a problem with them.

I've heard good and bad about MacMall, but I've always been pleased with the customer service at Amazon. And congrats! I made a similar jump last year going from a Beige/300 to a Dual G5 2.0. You'll really like the difference.

I have used MacConnection for my last two computers. Very good service and they usually give away extra ram or free shipping.

I'm inclined to use the Apple Online Stor primarily because it's the only way to get hluetooth internally. There really isn't any difference between the prices for the box itself.

These days, I buy all my machines stock from Apple's on-line store. I had a mediocre experience with Mac Mall's extended warranty, and a better experience since then with Apple Care. Buy the RAM from a 3rd party dealer, and install it yourself.

I will second the Mac connection recommendation, as far as customer service, though. UPS mis-delivered a second-day-air box to the wrong address (Dell's shipping/receiving dock, where it could have easily vanished without a trace) and the lady at Mac Connection stayed right on top of it until my box got found. She even put me on 3-way with the UPS rep, so I could hear her put them on the hot-seat.

OK I bit the bullet!

I checked out Amazon, but it said they weren't offering the free shipping for that item.

Anyway I prefer buying from a Mac specialist, so MacConnection it is!

My order says it will ship in 7-14 days. Optimistic? We'll see!

Thanks for the advice. I wish it was coming tomorrow!!!

I've really been happy with MacMall. They are very good to volume buyers (they give nice discounts on their CAP accounts), and I've never had an issue with anything I've ordered from them. I bought my Dual 2GHz G5 with 1GB of RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro from them for $2599 back in September, which is $1000 off the list price, and it was a new machine.

I used to buy all my Mac stuff from MacWarehouse also. They have been bought out by CDW and that is who I do all my online Mac purchases from. I've been very pleased with their service.

I've had good experiences with macmall in the past including them lowering the prices just because I asked nicely and was buying a few things. Also, they are giving 1gb with the 2 upper model G5's bringing them to 1.5 gb. that is well worth the 40 dollar installation cost, and if I read their catalog corectly they are shipping the G5's for free too at the moment.
