I updated my MacBook with the latest fan update and now it shuts down every few minutes due to overheating. How can I disable it without having to reinstall OS X completely?

I think the fan update was a firmware update, which would mean there is no way to downgrade, unfortunately. I'm no expert on MacBooks, though, so I could very well be wrong.

Ack! So even if I reinstall OS X, I'm still hosed. Glad I have AppleCare

If you have AppleCare then call them to find out for sure instead of ranting on a forum.

Ranting? I asked a question to try to find a solution for my problem before having to send off my primary computer to Apple for repairs, which will take who knows how long.

There may be a simple solution, such as zapping the PRAM. I'd give Apple a call.

Yeah, local store opens in an hour, hopefully I can get an answer. It's really annoying as I use my computer for work and it overheats constantly

Sounds more like the MacBook shut down problem (which is supposedly caused by overheating). I think the firmware update was a coincidence.

Nope, I've had this machine for a couple months and it's been running flawlessly. The update last week screwed it up

That's likely a coincidence. If anything the firmware update increased cooling efficiency. Your shutdowns sound like MB shutdown problem. Take it in.

Yeah, I'm like 99% sure it's the MB shutdown problem. I've tried heat testing by running both cores at 100% for long periods of time and it holds up just fine; the restarts seem to be random. Firewire also shorts out the computer and makes it auto-shutdown. I don't want to give it up for a week, but it looks like I have no choice. I can't deal with it shutting down every 5 to 25 minutes Curse first generation hardware, lol.
