Reading Macintouch is like reading a horror story - are there any 100% working MacBooks out there that don't whine, have a working screen and don't inflict burns on the user? If so let us know, because at the moment to me it looks like this Mac is a real lemon, but then people tend to post more when they have problems. Happy users speak up now!

I'm very happy. In the beginning, it was a bit crashprone, but the update (--> 10.4.6) and the firmware update really made a difference. No whine, no bent frame, it's fast.

It needs more RAM, though, 1 GB is not enough (x86 apps and Rosetta need some additional MB). It does have a few more issues compared to my PowerBook, particularly when waking up from sleep. It's an issue, but not too bad.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I'm very happy - though I'll be even happier once my Internet connection is back up & running so I can get the updates.

I'm loving my MBP. Coming from my old iBook G3 800, it's a night & day difference.

100% satisfied. And them some. Absolutely the best laptop I've ever owned, and I've owned 4 laptops to date.

My config is in the sig and I have not had any issues with the laptop as far as its' intended use. Yes I had an issue trying to use boot camp the first time and had to wipe my drive and start over. Yes, the USB modem in Windows XP via Boot Camp doesn't work yet. But these are all things above and beyond what the laptop is expected to do.

Now I just can't wait for the Universal Binary of Aperture so I can get that to work.

J.

{update} Just read in another thread that Aperture 1.1 is available now. W00t!

I just got mine and I can say the same... 100% totally happy! I have had a string of iBooks, TiBooks and several AlBooks, but this is the first machine in a long time that I actually got excited about using. It has made a huge impact on my work already and I can't wait to explore more uses and applications with it. No gaps, whine, perfect screen. I honestly don't know what else I could ask for in a portable.

Perfection!

100% satisfied here. It's the best laptop Apple's made since the Pismo. I'm happy enough that even if the particular model I have develops any of the known problems (whine, excessive heat, etc) that so long as Apple takes care of it via standard Apple Care repairs, I'm still going to be 100% satisfied.

Wow- I've never EVER been 100% satisfied with any product that I've bought in my entire life. There's always something that could've been better. I love my MBP and yes, it could've been better but I'm sure that even if it didnt have any of the problems that it does (Heat being my main gripe), I would've found something else to crib about.

Agreed with many of the above. 100% happy, even though it isn't 100% perfect. I am not an Apple apologist, but I also don't get my panties in a wad.

I must have jinxed myself. My MBP is going crazy now after I installed Aperture, the 1.0.1 update and then the 1.1 update. I'm now stuck at a messed up desktop. Garh. Going to try boot from install disk and see if it is a simple repair. I just finished loading all my apps!

I'm 100% satisfied with my MBP/2.0GHz/2.0GB/100GB-7200/256MB.

There might be one or the other thing they could fix (why is the lock slot so close to the USB port? what's the deal with the whine?) with a software update or in a next rev but nevertheless, yes, I'm totally satisfied. It's one hell of an awesome machine. I'd buy it again anytime.

I'm back in business. Not sure what happened on mine, though it happened right after Aperture 1.1 install, but my main login account got hosed and had a disk error. Fixed disk error after booting off install disc. Rebooting, nuked my main account. Rebooted and recreated the account. All is good.

Still love the MBP.

I got mine yesterdaay and I'd like to think that most of the bugs have been worked out.

I have none of the "common" issues that others have seen, and mine is sitting on my lap as I type this.

Coming from a latest-rev G4 iBook, this is a beautiful machine. The only scary part for me was seeing my face when I was setting up my login account, UGH!

I just got mine last night. Ordered from CDW (work bought it). serial is a W8613. I have no complaints, love it. LCD colors need a little tweaking but I'm anal about that stuff. Installed Darwin Ports, then used that to compile and install Minicom and Nmap. Works great.

The only thing that's really bugging me about mine is that (what I'm assuming is) the anti-glare coating makes the screen seem to have a slight "film-grain" look to my eye. The few other people I've asked can't see it, though. Maybe I'm just crazy!

My first mac..I loves it! At first there was some funky things goin on..Apps were crashing and stuff but now its working better. Maybe it did need to be "broken" in? And that last update seemed to do something too, like Oreocookie says. If apple provided a slot I would make sweet sweet love to this thing. Maybe in the next revision.

He "PAID" for it to be within spec, which it is. If a dead pixel is a deal-breaker for you, order from a reseller with a no-questions-asked, no-restocking-fee return policy....or get yourself a Mini and a CRT.

Sheesh.

I think this thing is the coolest computer I have owned in years. It does everything I want, and having owned a few Rav A macs over the years I am surprised how bug-free it is. I still flinch for a sec when booting windows NATIVELY on my new mac, but it is sad when this notebook blows the doors off of my Dual 2.0GHz G5 tower...

When you are paying that kind of money for a machine, a dead pixel is enough reason to get a replacement, dead pixels are not "within spec", send me a link to any products that advertise to be deffective on their specs and i'll send you a brand new Mini with a CRT,

I was unhappy with mine. I RMA'd it and got a Thinkpad T60 instead, which I like much better. I even like my two year old 1ghz Powerbook more than the MacBook Pro. Here's my list of reasons I didn't like the MacBook.

1. Way too hot
2. Too wide
3. Screen has poor viewing angle
4. It made the whining noise
5. Trackpad is too wide (my palms hit it)

The T60 has the same Core Duo processor, yet remains cool. In fact, the bottom of the Thinkpad is far cooler than the palm rests on the MacBook. That's not to say there wasn't a lot to like about the MacBook, it's just that those things were a deal breaker for me.

Actually, I still have the MacBook for a few more days, if anyone wants some comparison shots between it, a Powerbook and a Thinkpad T60 I'll post some.

Not trying to hate on Apple here (I love them) but rather prove a point:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=22194

Almost every company that sells a product with an LCD screen has a number or percentage of pixels that have to be bad (and usually in certain locations - i.e. fewer in the middle compared to more on the edges) before they will make a replacement. Of course they usually won't openly admit to their actual numbers, but here's a link to give you an idea:
http://www.tomshardware.com/2003/03/...lty/page3.html
If you go to page 7 you will see the ISO standard that most companies attempt to follow. Keep in mind that they generally still consider consumer grade to be class 2 and military grade to be class 1.

Correct, and you are absolutely right about the explanation of this rather common issue, It is considered "acceptable" by the distribuitor since they can't reject every screen that might have a problem with a pixel or two from the manufacturer - from testing all of them to re-stocking inventory the prices could double up easily, and nobody wants this.

I know it's a hassle to send your machine back, specially for something you "could live with" but as a customer that is purchasing the top of the line machine from a brand like Apple, you should bring your product for service and / or replacement IF you consider this an issue, some folks rather not do anything and that is fine, but servicing a MBP with a bad screen is not a "deal breaker" as posted above, its simple common sense for many professionals out there and a way to take a stand and bring quality control up within every step of the assembly line for future products.

All right, I have been playing around with my MBP 1.83 for about 1h. No noise, not too much heat, no dead pixel. So I guess for now I will be considered as 100% happy. :-)

1. Way too hot
2. Too wide
3. Screen has poor viewing angle
4. It made the whining noise
5. Trackpad is too wide (my palms hit it)

The screen resolution was nice, although a bit more vertical resolution would be useful. My old Powerbook didn't have the illuminated keyboard, so that was a welcome feature. I'd get one again if I had to replace my Powerbook, but I'd probably go with whatever replaces the 12" Powerbook.

How do you like the loud fans, smaller display and the 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400?

If it was way too hot, you either had it on the wrong type of surface or there was something wrong with it. Also, if there was a noticeable whine, you could have sent it in for repair.

I am satisfied with my MBP. It does not make any whining noises, no dead pixels and it runs much cooler than the 12" pbook I had.

It runs Safari and other native apps at blazing speeds. The viewing angles are great, much better than any PC laptop I've seen on display recently in retail stores. I don't know what the hell people are talking about.
