Well if you compare the base systems w/o BTO options you're still looking at the old $1099, $1299, and $1499 price points. Did they change the UK prices?

The savings are even better if you include the fact that memory has been doubled in all the machines. You would have paid £50 - £100 to upgrade to the new memory capacities.

So in effect the machines are realistically £80 - £130 less than before (if you spec them the same) AND they have better processors as well.

The big difference for me is the fact that the 2 GHz models have 4 MB of L2 cache now while before they were 2 MB. (And of course the 1 GB RAM increase and larger hard drives.)

It's only been doubled in the 2.0 GHz machines. The 1.83 GHz entry level model still comes with 512MB standard. </nitpick>

For £19 *less* than I paid in May, you get (on the mid-range, white 2GHz model):

- Core 2 Duo (64-bit) processor instead of Core Duo (32-bit)
- 80GB hard drive instead of 60GB
- 4MB L2 cache instead of 2MB
- 1GB RAM instead of 512MB (still two chips rather than one, but Apple have made the RAM prices for their notebooks reasonable again (they used to charge more for the MacBook than the iMac, even though they used the exact same RAM))
- Dual Layer 6x SuperDrive instead of a Single Layer 4x SuperDrive

Which is nice.

It doesn't bother me, as there's no way I could have been without this computer for the last two months, my iBook being hideously slow whenever I play around with it, but it is nice for people buying now.

2 GB upgrade for 1.8 costs $250
2 GB upgrade for 2.0 costs $175

120 GB HD upgrade for 1.8 costs $200

I'm glad Apple finally put in the C2D in the macbooks. The only thing that sucks is I wish they would have put the 1GB of ram in the entry level one(1.83ghz) As that is the one I could afford. But I will be using the macbook for mostly surfing the web, storing pictures, music, and ms word. But I'm pretty happy the my macbook will have C2D. I'm excited! Haven't ordered yet because I haven't got paid

Still very happy with my low-end 1.83 Core Duo white MacBook that I bought the day it was released. :-) No problems at all (besides it falling asleep by itself which got fixed by a firmware update).

Would there be any reason to upgrade from a rev. A MacBook (2.0Ghz, 2GB, 120GB HD)? Besides the C2D and DL superdrive, there's no change. Functionally, the only difference would be a few seconds of waiting time for booting and in certain applications, right?

Don't be too upset that you don't have 1 GB in the 1.8 model. After all, you're gonna be taking the RAM out in either model if you're going to upgrade to 2 GB RAM.

I'd rather buy the 2.0 without RAM (reduced price) so that I could put in 2 x 1 GB modules.

In the 2.0 model, you have 2 choices with the leftover RAM:

1. keep on hand, so that you can put the RAM back into the laptop so that Apple can't claim that the RAM was the source of whatever problem you're sending it in for.

2. ebay or craigslist the RAM, for not much $.

Personally, I think the upgrades should be the same price, regardless of what the original configurations were. Apple, of course, can charge whatever the market can bear, but they're paying the same wholesale price for the 120 GB HD regardless of what model they end up putting it in. Why should it cost more to put it into the 1.8 GHz model? Same with the RAM.

The 1.8 GHz model starts out with a cheaper drive, so the difference between that and an upgraded drive is higher (than the difference between a stock and upgraded drive in the 2.0 GHz model). It would be utterly unintuitive to have the upgrade cost be the same.

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Rather than paying the actual difference in price, you'd have both pay the same, meaning that either one is undercharged, or one is paying too much? Huh?

I bought the Rev. A MacBook base model without a SuperDrive so I could buy a Dual Layer when they came out and put it in myself.

Now I have to just figure out where to get my hands on one of these new drives.

I couldn't care less about the Core 2 Duo chip right now. The only thing that could have made me want to upgrade is a seriously better video card.

I know. I plan to upgrade to 100GB. How do you get the data from your old HD to your new one? (I know about Carbon Copy Cloner but I not sure about it...)
