For the past 10 times i off my macbook, i hold the power button until the whole MB off. I only realized it lately that it hasn't been properly shut down. Furthermore, to wait for a proper shut down is about 15-20 secs.

Can anyone comment is it healthy to do so and now on i should be doing the proper shutdown right?

That maybe normal shutdown time depending on how many applications you have open. Yes, you should shut down properly. I do not bother turning off my computers anymore. I close the lid on my Macbook and let it sleep.

Of course not. You put it to sleep.

yep...my ibook had some impressive up times when i had it...the macbook doesn't ever get powered down, but i restart a lot to futz around in windows rather often so no 2 month up times for it.

maybe none of you have this problem, but due to my ADD/minor computer addiction, i shut down my computer in full when i'm done with it because otherwise i'd constantly be jumping back on to do nothing useful when i'm trying to do non-computer things like cleaning or homework.

plus, i find that full-restarts sometimes result in a snappier (tm) user experience.

also: since you brought it up, yes i do shut down my refrigerator -- when it crashes.
that would be when everything in there turns to ice.
yes, folks, i have a very crappy mini-fridge and there's nothing to be done about that sob.

I know I'm quoting you twice but ...

Do you turn your car off? Do you turn your iPod off? Do you turn your electric toothbrush off? Do you turn your house lights off? Do you turn your TV off?

You can't generalize this.

I've always turned computers off overnight. Apart from anything else, the sleep light on macs is (ironically) not exactly conducive to me getting to sleep. And yeah, I find fresh restarts make things snappier .

I like to give my PowerBook a break at night. Call it a placebo but I always feel it runs better when its been shut down.

so to generalize. It's better to have it shut down properly? OR.. it just makes no difference?

yes, it's better to shut it down via the apple menu as opposed to a hard power down by holding the power button
