How do you adjust the picture contrast in VLC?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum for this question, but I thought the people here might know the answer.

When I download a movie or TV show, then play it using the VLC app, the picture seems darker than it should be. Why is this, and how can I adjust the settings to get a better picture?
