Well I finally broke down and picked a dual 1Gig from CompUSA today. I also picked up 2(yes two!) 17" Apple Studio Displays to go along with it. Finally, I just purchased 2GB's of Ram to intall in the G4 on Monday. All I can say is AWESOME!!! And to think that I just went to CompUSA to pick up some blank CDR's.

This awesome machine will be replacing my 5-year-old Starmax 300/200 Apple clone. In fact my wife still uses the Starmax daily. I upgraded the Starmax with a G3/300 processor card and is still working just fine.

I will be posting some pics of all this gear as soon as I clean up the office a bit. By the way, I will be using this G4 for audio/video editing.

I was actually planning on purchasing this setup for a while and yesterday when I was at CompUSA I just decided that this would be the day.

I will be using FCP 3.0 for video editing and Pro Tools LE 5 for audio recording/editing. I'm in the process of installing it now. Will post pics soon.

I bought my Starmax used five years ago and the only brand new computer I ever bought is a Pismo G3/500 laptop almost two years ago, which I use daily. I am running OS 9.2 on the Starmax with 128Mb of RAM and it rarely crashes. My wife and kids use that computer daily.

I just can't get over how amazing pictures look on these 17" studio displays!

BTW- how is your PTLE working ?
is it the oo1 or the mbox or the toolbox ?

do you have to disable one of the processors?, or does it work fine with both on ?

Congrats on the new setup! Sounds like a ton of fun!

I have one question though, is it a loud machine? I've heard people talk about the really loud fans. Notice the sound of a dust buster at all?

I have ProTools LE with the Digi001. I will let you know how it runs when I install it within the next few days, just been to busy lately to get around to it. Right now the Digi 001 is still inside my Beige G3/333.

Yes, the fans are loud! I will be changing them out pretty soon.

It actually came like that. The Pro Mouse is for the G4 tower but I switched it with my two-button Logitech mouse.

Nah, they're all white like that now for the keyboard, mouse, and some other cable but it leaves my memory now.

I know that this isnt all that important, in the big scheme of things, but that white cable on the mouse is just plain ugly. You'd figure that with all the emphasis that Apple puts on design, one would expect that they would maintain better color coordination on their products.

clear mouse deserves clear cable.

I'm not trying to be an ass here, it's just that I hold Apple to a higher standard than other computer makers.

OK! I'm getting a new mouse pad with no cushion. Does that mean soft beds are not good for the body?

Depends what you mean by soft. It's bad to slouch into the bed, but its not good to be up straight as a board.

I believe that's a 3M mousing surface with built in wrist rest and pad.

I agree (as a carpal tunnel syndrome sufferer) that the rest puts pressure on the nerve channel and causes numbness. Nevertheless this is my favorite mouse pad

Here's what you do. Pay the twenty dollars for the whole thing. When you get home peel the mousing surface (it's self adhesive) and stick it right to your desktop.

Voila! you have a near zero thickness high traction mouse pad that stays put. You can now rest a good part of your forearm on the desktop and move the mouse with your wrist (raise the sensitivity). Wonderful for games in particular.

Of course if your desktop is real wood, you may not want to do this....

I'm with you here

They used to come with clear cable, it looked so much better. However, it seems Apple is choosing white for all their cables now, FireWire, power, USB etc.

Ah well, only a couple of weeks now until my DP867

That'll keep me occupied and stop me taking notice of things like this! Nice setup.

I agree on the cables. Clear looks better, and people can see how much damage they are doing when they slam them between the table and the wall (or the desk drawer, or roll over them with the chair, etc...). You can look right in and see the damage done.

I always thought the clear cables were a brilliant idea by Apple. And then *POOF* they're gone.

The other white cable they are including is the phone/modem cable, ALL WHITE.

yes, they are air ducts to suck in air through the front of the machine.

Not sure it it would void the warranty but I can't use this computer while being this loud. I'm using it for audio recording. Now I wished I bought an iMac or even a used Cube. Kinda sad really...
