Mods, please move this if appropriate.

Hi everyone. I was wondering, do you think there will be a new version of iLife and iWork next year. Should I get version '09? Should I wait so I don't have to upgrade twice? What are your thoughts/predictions/advice?

There will be a new version EVERY year (or two years).
iLife 09 rocks. So does iWork 09.
Your call.

I would say go for it. I only use iPhoto but the built in ability to upload to Facebook and Flickr are welcome additions, as well as the geotagging and faces feature. Those alone are worth the price. Plus, I personally hate being behind in version numbers
As far as iWork goes, Numbers seems to be greatly improved, but I rarely use the program to justify buying it. I tried the demo, didn't use it much so I ended up removing it.

Does the faces feature work even when the face is at an angle, or if you show the back of their head?

Did you really mean to ask if a feature designed to recognize faces would work on the back of someone's head?

Facial recognition, while cool, isn't very useful. I'd much prefer it if they added more functionality in editing photos and generating web galleries.

a face is the front of a head, not the back or the side

Faces does work and it seems to only get confused with blood relatives (e.g. it will mistake brothers sometimes or daughters and mothers, etc.). Fun to play with but not too useful...

It also gets confused by trees, hands, toddlers or adults with similar facial expressions, and occasionally it even mismatches skin color.
Even more annoying, however, are the hundreds of instances in my library where it simply failed to recognize that there was a face in the picture at all.
Nice, and I love the idea, but it's just innacurate enough to be completely useless.

I have to completely disagree with those statements.
While I acknowledge that the face detection is not perfect and sometimes brings up confusing results, the ability to easily TAG people's faces alone is worth a lot to me. Sure, I could create folders and dump each picture with faces I know off into it, but that's tedious. After some working with faces, the hitrate is >50% for me, which is good enough. The ability to mass-edit makes it workable, to say the least.
Personally, I would have upgraded to iPhoto 9 just for this feature.

I've achieved a pretty high hit rate but when I import my photos I tag them which is 100% accurate and is easy with hotkeys (built into iPhoto '09). I think facial recognition is something to add to hype up the program. I'd really prefer Apple focus on other aspects of iPhoto.

I'd wait until the end of January before jumping into the iLife/iWork bandwagon. There are rumors of an Apple event near the end of the month, so better safe than sorry.

Hopefully iWork 2010 comes out with it, as it traditionally has done.
