Dear Friends,

I have a 3400c that I have decided to install Linux on. I was thinking of doing this with Yellow Dog 4.1. According to their web site this should work if you follow the 3.0 directions since this is an "Old World" machine.

Has anyone done this and does anyone have any tips for this LInux newbie?

I plan to download Yellow Dog on my iBook and burn it to a CD and then istall on my 3400c. Any suggestions on that? I have never burned a mounted image on to a CD either, so this is all new to me, I could use all the help I can get!

You'll use Disk Utility to burn the downloaded image to the disk. Yellow Dog is pretty easy to install, although with Linux you're going to be doing a lot of learning and there will certainly be some frustration. I'd recommend getting a good linux book or even more specifically a Yellow Dog book.

Thank you Ooga Booga. Is there a specific verion of Boot-X that I should use with the 3400c? I see some people have had some issues with "newer" versions.

Also I have seen places to download YDL 3.0 and 4.0 but not 4.1 Does anyone know where I can download 4.1?

You could always try NetBSD if you wanted something other than Linux.

Personally, I think they're easier to install, setup, and use (except maybe Debian)

I finally found the downloads, but it appears that I am not properly burning the ISOs to CDs to make them bootable. ANy assistance?

I actually figured out how to do it through some hints at Yellow Dog's site.

I have succesfully installed it on a partition on my iBook, but my Old World 3400c is another story!
I was told to try 3.0.1 so I burned some CDs and got things prepared. I finally got Boot X installed and copied the Kernels to the Mac OS 8.5 partition and got Boot X to work but when I try to choose Linux (I do not have it installed yet, just the kernels copied and Boot X working) it stops at an error that says, "Warning unable to open an initial console".

So now I guess I just need help in getting it installed! :-)

I finally figured it out, I was pointing to the wrong RAM disk per BootX's directions and reading the old directions for YDL 2.2 I found out I should point to the one on the CD. Also I had to instal 3.0.1 rather than 4.0.1.

I should also mention that I think this is a great solution for old Macs that are non Mac OS X compatible as you get the Linux power and speed without having to spend $120.00 for an install CD nor upgrades that may make that old Mac compatible.
