Hi,

How much RAM would you recommend to get when buying the Intel Core Duo iMac? I'm trying to decide if I want to upgrade now, or get the standard 256, and put in some more ram at a later date.

Thanks!

intel macs come with 512mb. if you want to run software under rosetta you need at least 1.5gb-2gb, if you're going to use it for regular word processing apps, www browsers, email, and media...1gb should be enough for now. it all depends on how many apps you use at one time, and how ram hungry these apps are, but generally 1gb+ is a good way to go.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

512MB too low, 1GB a must, 1.5GB better, 2GB luxury.
I'm on 1.5 GB, after 5 days uptime 1GB is a must.
I'm-a trying to wonder, wonder, wonder why you, wonder, wonder why you act so.

I have two 512MB chips in mine, and I certainly have no complaints about the speed. I use MS Office under Rosetta and it's every bit as fast (faster, probably) than my Pismo was. I guess if you're coming to the iMac from an older machine anything will seem luxurious!

I would probably upgrade later. This is gonna sound stupid, but if it goes slower at first with the 512mb ram, you'll get used to it, and when you upgrade to a gig, it will seem really really fast. Again, thats pretty stupid reasoning, but whatever

I have 512Mb right now in my 20" Core Duo and its still.. really damn fast. And this is coming from a former 1.5Ghz Powerbook owner with 1Gb RAM. Its still faster then that, even with half the RAM. But in NO WAY am i saying not to upgrade, if i could i would, i just dont have the cash. Applesnapple, im hoping what your saying is true, cause that exactly what im gonna be doing as soon as i get the money.

1 Gb seems perfect to me. If you've got the cash though, RAM is the cheapest upgrade. Word runs about the same speed for me with 1 Gb as my imac G5 1st Gen did with 768 Mb.

I would definitely bump it up to 1gb at your earliest convenience. It will be a much nicer computing experience, especially when running 2 or more applications at once.

the 1Gb chip from Crucial will run about $160. But I felt it was worth it. Cheaper ram chips are $120-140. Just go Crucial, it's worth the extra $20-40.

The MacBook Pro notebooks use the same type of memory.
