Sean Connery could fart and it would be more interesting to listen to than listening to Crapton.

Yes it does. It just says very little that's interesting.

Compare? Are we gonna "decide" whether I'm right about MY OPINION? What type of artist would YOU consider as someone to compare him to?
Another old worn out musician from the '60's?
Another old worn out musician who did MTV Unplugged in order to revive a dead career?
Should we keep it current and compare him to other blues musicians? I don't think you wanna that.

Man....and I love Clapton...
And SRV...
And Jonny Lang
And Joe Bonamassa
And John Mayer (especially the JM3 stuff)
But seriously, does everyone here dislike Clapton?

No. I don't, and I like SRV, some Mayer, and Lang as well. I don't recall ever hearing anything from Joe Bonamassa, so I'll have to check his stuff out.

I don't really know Bonamassa or Mayer's stuff but the difference is that no one is going around calling these guys "God" or accusing them of being the "greatest guitar player ever". Well, not the last three anyway.
Eric Crapton doesn't deserve these distinctions.

I agree with most of the sentiment here. I find that Eric Clapton is EXTREMELY overrated. He was excellent back when he was with Cream, after that, it was a long slow descent into rewriting a song for a beer commercial, mmm, nothing goes down like corporate money.

Clapton has (since "Pilgrim" IMO) descended into the depths of the "Adult Contemporary" genre, but he is most definitely NOT overrated.
His sense of timing, and of playing exactly the perfect note at the perfect time, were and are impeccable. It's not in how many notes you can play.
Side discussion:
Mark Knopfler does basically exactly the same thing as Clapton, except Knopfler does them *completely* wrong - misses the mark just so perfectly, it makes my skull do tectonics. Case in point: "Money for Nothing". Everything on that song grooves like hell, EXCEPT Knopfler's guitar, which is completely out of time and just TOTALLY unfunky. Ack.

What do Eric Clapton and his deceased son have in common?
They both made an impact on rock.

For those who haven't heard Bonamassa, check out "So Many Roads." You can buy it off of iTunes.
$.99. One song. See if you like.

I like Clappers. Met him a couple of times, nice bloke. Got bored senseless at one of his shows once (good job I was hammered) - definitely one for the CD player over a nice dinner with pleasant company rather than a live show.

I love clapton, went to his show in OKC this year. I enjoyed every minute of it. In my opinion Clapton is a god of rock and is passing the torch to quality guys like Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall.

Dude, it's quite clear that you simply don't understand Knopfler's style. It's an acquired taste, for sure, but once you "get it" you'll understand why he's a master. I guess it helps in the understanding if you're a guitarist though.

I listen to Rage Against the Machine, CKY, Linkin Park, and Queens of the Stone age, and I still find Clapton's music interesting, and enjoy listening to it.

Eh, I think Clapton used to be OK (like back when he first did "Layla"), but somehow he morphed into the musical equivalent of ether quite a while ago.

I knew you'd say that, and you're probably right.
I think it's 'cuz my musical approach to rock music came through blues and funk.
And there is decidedly not a single shred of black music in what Knopfler does.

Yeah, possibly. Mine came up through Elvis, Frank and all those guys with a bit of English folk thrown in.
Instrument of choice could also have a bearing. I mean, I hear loads of people telling me that Jon Lord is a master of the organ, but I've absolutely no idea why - it's just not on my radar.

I think that really has to do more with what he was doing being unheard of at the time, and throwing everything he had at it.
Mr Lord is also an exceptionally nice guy.
I can appreciate great guitar players. But the greatness, to me, is in the expression. Albert Collins, to me, was one of the greatest blues guitarists. His technique was mediocre, but he put more feeling into a single slightly-starved Telecaster note than Knopfler has had in his entire career.
And he grooved like a mother****er.
As for playing fast and yet with real balls, this guy has always done it for me:

Clapton never really did it for me; but my taste aside, he is an undeniably amazing guitarist.
And "Layla" is beat to death. Check out "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad" on Derek and the Dominoes: Live at the Fillmore.

I know that part of this discussion is about guitar players with rock roots, but if we were to open this up to include guitar players in general, if you are looking for versatility, the ability to sell a groove, understanding of harmony, improvisation ability, technical ability, big ears, ability to work within a rhythm section/band behind other players, and an impressive, varied list of credentials, my money is on John Scofield:

Aye, you can't argue with a bit of Albert. Legend, that bloke.
However, he and Knopfler have different styles. Blues vs. country. It's apples and oranges. I wouldn't even begin to compare them, 'coz it simply can't be done.

MMW has always seemed less jazz in origin and influence than Scofield, but they have always been able to sound great as a group, and their writing is always interesting. Throwing Scofield into the mix provides for a great marriage... Scofield obviously has the greater depth in being able to develop a solo with a greater set of harmonic tools to draw from, but they are only as good as the content being fed to him by MMW, so it's a great matchup!
Here is some more of Scofield from the same concert:
YouTube - Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood - 7/5/07 - Part 4
There are a couple of BB King inflections in the beginning of his solo, but check out the stuff that MMW is doing behind him.. everybody in this group has great ears!
