I saw that you could download wordpress and presumably have a blog on your own webhost. I'm curious as to the advantages/disadvantages of setting this up vs. using wordpress.com to host your blogs.

None of the cool kids I know use it.
Advantages: you own it, you can install addons.
Disadvantages: you have to install, maintain, and pay for it.

Disadvantage: You have to have an existing Web host and database access.

Ok, so Starman's and Chuckit's point is that I have much more flexibility because I own it and I can install add ons.
the downside is that I need to have a web host with database access (what web host doesn't offer database access at this point) which cost money as opposed to a free arrangement with a hosted blog (is that the right terminology.)
I'm curious to here from folks who prefer using the hosted blogs like blogspot over setting up your own.

Blogspot blows. I had it for a while, but you can't backup your blog. You CAN do some mojo to pseudo-backitup, but it's a joke.
If you were to go with a pre-hosting site, use wordpress.com

I just pulled blogspot out of the air, because I know a friend uses that, I've not done any research into any blog providers. I'm more curious as to why would I want to go that route when I can download wordpress for free and set up my own site

There really isn't a reason. Free hosting services are for people unwilling or unable to set up a blog for themselves. There's no particular advantage to them if you're willing and able.
