On my 17" PB, both are installed, Preview is default for PDF files. Shouldn't Acrobat Reader be default?

No, AR is installed, of course. But Preview is set as standard. Preview sux for viewing .PDF, you should change it to AR.

BTW.: Is Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 or 5.1 installed on your 17" Powerbook?

That's what I thought, too. Changed it to AR.

BTW: It's Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 on my 17" PB (Swiss German localisation). When I click "update", no results even though AR 5.1 exists in German. When will AR 6 be out?

Open PDFs in QuickTime Player for faster viewing

One problem with Apple's Preview is that pdf files often load and operate very slowly. One way around this problem is to open them in quicktime Player instead. They load almost instantly, and can be resized and browsed through very quickly.

To open a PDF in QuickTime Player, you have to use the File -> Open command to open the file rather than dragging it onto the QT Player application. To go between pages, use the arrow keys. One disadvantage is that you can't go to a specific page like you can in Preview. But for resizing and viewing speed, it is superior.

Interesting. I tried it but it is still slower than AR for me and of course less flexible but you'd expect that from something designed to play movies wouldn't you.

i use preview, it seems to be faster, and it definately prints faster.

For me it depends on the .pdf - some are best navigated using the content links and whatnot in which case I need Acrobat, others, Preview is faster for.

But ultimately (and I asked for this long ago) we need a better .pdf viewer.

Something fast, with minor editing capabilities (i.e. placing bookmarks in big files, highlighting, allowing copying of text, etc.).

Anybody want to build it?

I use Preview. The reason for this is because I view @dobe the same way I view Micro$oft.

Both companies write mass-produced software of dubious quality.

Preview offers the simple elegance traditionally associated with Apple software. I just wish it was brushed metal! (I view the HIG as being outdated.)

What I would really like is the ability to edit a layer above the pdf. I don't care if the editing only consists of text, either, because I'd use it for filling out forms (instead of having to pray that I can get "fillin enabled" forms).

Preveiw, Acrobat reader just seems I dono... and it never works propperly when I try.... and I'm to lazy to fix it heh.

lately I've had a bit more anamosity towards adobe too... the whole PC pref thing kinda pissed me off.

Layers are included in Acrobat 6/PDF 1.5

I use acrobat.

Preview really sucks compared to the features of Acrobat, although acrobat has serious bugs (taking it to the edge unusable). But preview is just too limited, with a horrible interface.

I would actually consider using preview if it only kept it's PostScript preview feature from NextStep/OpenStep/Rhapsody. This *REALLY* makes my mad--Apple has the software for previewing PostScript, but they do not release it. I heard that it's a cost of PostScript licensing, but I don't care. It's just stupid. They could probably charge $130 instead of $129 for upgrades an more than pay for any PS license.

At least they provide X11, so I can use GhostScript (not to mention xemacs

).

I use Preview for those small pdfs and anything larger than 3 or so pages, I use Acrobat because on those pages, Preview is slooooow on any machine.

I use Preview to open pdf files. Acrobat for OS X annoys me. Crappo carbonized app. Thank you Adobe!
