We'll need more information about your system.
Go to the Apple menu and select "About this Mac"
In the window that appears, it will say
"OS X Yosemite
Version 10.10.3"
or
"OS X Mavericks
Version 10.9.4"
or something like that.
What *exactly* does it say?
In the same window, it will give information about the computer you're running it on. For example, on my system, it says:
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011)
2,7 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
What does yours say? We don't need your serial number; the first three lines will do for now.

It would also help if you can let us know the size of your internal hard drive, how old it is, how much free space it has, and its' rotational speed.
