I am impressed. I am not easily impressed. Dexter is one hell of a TV series. It is well cast, well written, interesting, exciting and creative. Unfortunately it is only 12 episodes, but most of the best series aren't diluted into 20+ episodes per season.
This TV series has a very black sense of humor and the protagonist is a serial killer. Someone wrote that this was the most morally ambiguous TV series airing now and I'd agree with that assessment. I'm not sure where the morality lies here.. exactly.
Regardless, one has no problems sympathizing with the protagonist, who works as a forensic expert when he's not killing people. The series is graphic enough to make me cringe at least once every episode.
I don't what I can say, except after watching the politically correct desert that is Prison Break, Dexter is like a glass of pure, cold water.
I'd have given it 5 thumbs-up if it wasn't for that fact that this isn't really something one can watch with everyone. Some people won't make it through an entre episode, because of black morality and graphic scenes.

I've heard about it and it came recommended by others. I don't have Showtime though. It's not on iTunes, is it?

No official date has been set yet, but it will most likely start in Summer or Fall.

How in the world is it appropriate to compare a network TV show with an unrestricted cable show?
Would you compare Deadwood and Bonanza?
On topic: I haven't seen this show, but it is getting some good reviews and friends have said they enjoyed in. If Donald Trump or Rosie were in it I might watch it.

Dexter was great, I'm looking forward to season 2.
You should also make time for The Wire, which I was unaware of, and is incredible.
I can't give up HBO/Showtime now, or there would be hardly any weekly dramas worth watching.

I started getting into this show last week... and I have to say I agree with Voodoo 100%. I usually dislike TV shows... I find most of them boring, with bad actors, bad plots, and it seems like the story will go on as long as there are viewers >cough< lost >cough<. Dexter... it just really blows me away. He's a killer... a vigilante of sorts.. which of course I love, becuase I share a similar viewpoint. But it's not just that, it's the complexity of his character, the childhood lessons, the inner monologue... I just really really dig this series. It's dark... sometimes funny..sometimes tense... sometimes gross. Overall, it's very macabre. I just finished episode 4 last night, I'll be watching the rest very soon.

I really like it, too. You never know what to do with the main character … with most of the characters actually. Even the abuse ex husband of Dexter's girlfriend has his `good moments' when you think `he's absolutely right'. Or the Lt's colleague who is actually the only one who suspects Dexter of being more than he appears to be.
It's a great show and I hope it won't be diluted by quantity instead of quality.

I just finished the last one, episode 12. Wow. Crazy. The funny thing is I pinned the ice truck killer when he first came on the show, for some odd reason. Haha. Also, in the last episode, I noticed that Dexter has my EXACT lockpick set. Sweet.

Well, Dexter is a great TV series and I am looking forward to seeing the next season. I have already read the book, but nevertheless
The actors are just so well cast and the salsa music and everything in the TV series is just so nice.
One of the best things to come out of TV for a long time. Heroes is also great. I haven't seen Rome yet, but I'll keep an eye out.

This show is freakin' awesome.
I just finished episode 10. Looking forward to 11 and 12, and season 2.
It's an interesting mix. A bloody, gruesome, macabre show interspersed with truly amusing black comedy, about a serial killer with a heart of gold.

Yeah, I love it. I actually had a weird 'dexter' dream the other day..... about Dexter and his relationship with his dad, and how they used to go to this waterfall place, and how in the end he caught the bad guy and had to eat him in front of his sister. Very strange.

It's a terrific show (and you can download Season One via the iTunes Store).
Michael C. Hall is one of my favorite actors. He was irresistable as David Fisher on Six Feet Under. In this role, well ... it's just so unbelievably creepy. I have seldom found a television series more riveting, more haunting, more engrossing than this one. Wow!

Eeeeent! Nope. Season Two is entirely the creation of the show's writers, and is not based on any novel by Jeff Lindsay.

I hope he doesn't get caught, or if he does it better be after four or five seasons. Then they can have a trial, and he can try to get off using his forensic wizardry. Now that would be cool!

Definitely worth watching all 12 episodes. This is all one long story, thrilling and filled with black humor. If you thought the first episode of season one was alright, then you will like the rest even more.

If you enjoy the TV series, definitely read the books. The first book and the first season of the TV show run pretty much in parallel. After that, they diverge.
Dexter has a great dark sense of humor and the book shows it even more. One of my favorite lines is something about how people are a great mystery, "Like the infield fly rule."
I am actually just starting the third in the book series - Dexter in the Dark. I'll update as I get through it.

I wouldn't spoil anything beyond just saying, "It's really good. Funnier than the second book." That kind of thing.
My wife is starting a new book club tomorrow night. I'm trying to get her to suggest Darkly Dreaming Dexter to the group. Better than Oprah's Book Club-type stuff.
Some pretty religious type people in this club, so it could be interesting to see what would happen.

I caught up last night on Sunday's episode and I like where this season is going.

My wife and I have read the books. When we get back to America next year, maybe she can join your wife's club.
And doesn't he have a new Dexter book coming out?
Unfortunately I don't have Showtime, and iTunes appears to wait until the season is over before putting them up.

The books are fun.. but different than the TV series. The spirit of the TV series is a shade brighter and the books uses it's format to describe almost everything from Dexter's perspective exclusively.
I have enjoyed both the books and the TV series, but not for the same reasons. I can certainly recommend both, but I favor the TV series a bit more because of the cast.
They bring the characters so wonderfully to life. Dexter, Dokes and Ángel are perfectly cast. The plot diverges from the books in the second season of Dexter, and just as well.
While I don't mind, the books pull a Twin Peaks (second and mostly third book), which is not for everyone. Just the hardcore fans

Dokes is brillantly done, although lately I feel like he's been cast a little too much as comic relief. But I think Dexter is probably one of the best characters I've ever seen on TV. Michael Hall is really shining in this role (which, when you think about it, is a little disturbing).

I'm so glad to hear great things about this show. What really made me curious about it were the adverts on the buses - but I never got into it (partly because I started watching Weeds.) Now that my Weeds obsession has calmed a bit, I'll start downloading Season 1.
