Why is iDisk so F#$%@ing SLOW?

I've been mounting my idisk on my desktop by going through the Network Browser app in OS 9.1. The disk appears, and works okay, when it's loaded. But it takes at least 3 minutes for the disk to APPEAR. Then when it does, it slows down everything in the OS to a crawl. I can see the dual arrows in the upper left corner blinking and blinking away, while I can't use the finder or move windows.
Copying files isn't slow, but just having it on my desktop by itself screws everything else up.
And just so you know, this is on a DP 533 G4 with a cable modem. SHOULD be very fast.

Sorry I can't answer your question why, but I can sympathize. I have seen the eact same activity with my iDisk since day 1. That has been on a DSL line and T1 line at work. It is unfortunate because it is a great use of technology integrated into the System, but it is basically unusable. I never use mine - opting instead for one of thise "freebie" ftp sites.

iDisk used to be that way.
It is so fast now!
Its unbelieveable!
No lag whatsoever! And this is from Oz too!

iDisk feels about 200 times faster in OS X 
Well, not quite 200 times.. but you get the point. (This with a slow cable modem on a Rev A iMac)

My experience is from OS9, btw.
Never tried it in OSX...

i have always found the iDisk pretty slow too, i thought it may have been because I was in Australia.

I'd be willing to wager that Apple simply hasn't put enough hard cash behind iTools in the form of hardware / bandwidth to fully support it. I could be dead wrong, but it sure seems that way.

I'm on a cable modem,and aldo idisk doesn't reach lightningspeeds,it's very good useable for me.The only problem was to open it for the first time,after that,it always worked fine.

maybe if they decentralised the iDisk servers to each country or region that uses them we would see faster times. As the system appears now, every iDisk must run off the same server.
