Hi,

I've owned a 15" Powerbook G4 and now 17" Macbook Pro and they both serve me extremely well - especially considering I've used the Powerbook every single day for the last four years - it's not broken down once. But what will the next generation Macbook Pros have above previous generations?

I get the feeling we're about to see a major leap, especially with LED screens, which are brighter, higher colour definition, and consume less power. And also hard-state hard drives - we may not be quite there yet with hard state hard drives and they're expensive, but it would be excellent if they were an option in the high-end new Macbook Pros. Also what about a Blu-Ray and HD-DVD drive?

Something like the just-leaked Dell M1330 specs*...

2.4Ghz/800Mhz FSB Core 2 Duo
4GB DDR2-667 memory
250GB 'conventional' hard drive option, probably a solid state drive (note terminology) or hybrid hard drive (if they can add OS X support in 10.4) option
LED-backlit LCD screen
nVidia 8-series graphics
WWAN options

Blu-Ray or HD-DVD seems overdue, but I'd expect to see it in the Mac Pro first (which is also overdue for a general upgrade).

Nice find M Duell - thanks!

I'm hoping Apple will release new LED cinema displays soon, too - while their current line still look nice, they're a bit behind on technology now.

IIRC, DVDs came first to the Powerbooks. It's not inconceivable to see Bluray first in the Macbook Pro - watching movies on airplanes is a major usage for laptops, but noone watches movies with their Mac Pro.

Otherwise I agree with mduell's suggested stats.

How's that for timing!?

Very nice - LED backlit displays and a hi-resolution option for the 17"...I wonder how much difference they'll make.
