I'm more surprised to learn there was $100 million in revenue to begin with.

That's too bad. Hopefully they'll keep the line going - I want a disk based one, and I really hope they keep improving on the software.

They need to face that they lost the MP3 battle. Even iPods are going to go on the decline over the next few years as people will switch to iPhones or similar Smartphones. There is no catching up to the iPod at this point and they don't have anything that even comes close to the iPod touch.
I bet that within a year they only thing left of the Zune will be the software on Windows Mobile Devices.

I finally got to try a Zune in person at Future Shop. What a paltry display. It took a while to find it, because the first few rows were full of iPods and iPod accessories. Once I got to the Zune display it looked like a mini landfill on the counter. There were 3 Zunes, one 80 GB and the other smaller ones of different color. I tired both of the smaller ones first, and they failed to turn on. Then, I picked up the larger one, and it was stuck on some start up screen with weird symbols and I could not get it to work either.
Then, I sort of chuckled and rolled my eyes. Not being able to use it, I then inspected the design, and my god, the 80 GB model is horrendous. Just one big, thick boxy thing. While I like the large, high res screen (seen on internet), and the interface (seen on internet), the design is terrible. I could just imagine what is lurking in the MP3 Zune world (constraints and crashes).
$100 million lost in revenue, who is buying these? The iPod touch is so much better, no question.

If they do any work on it I think the only possibility is to improve it.

Heh. People are losing their music (with no refund) because the Zune Marketplace updates its catalog with newer releases of the same album, then deactivates the old one. They then can't play or sync the music, they also can't get their money back.
DRM is comcastic! Go, go, Zune Marketplace!

I've been saying for 2 years that the Zune OS will just migrate into windows Mobile with either the music player software being called "Zune" or they will take the Zune interface and merge it with the WM OS.
They already lost the MP3 player war. Just now when they are coming up with reasonably ok products the market moves to smartphones (iPhones) and MS is caught 5 years behind AGAIN and need to play catchup. Their days of power when they just could just buy out the competition or crushed it with free bundled versions are long over, thankfully.
At this point any company still trying to win the MP3 player war is as pointless as trying to come up with a competitor for VHS Players. I can't imagine they make any sort of worthwhile income after they take all the manufacturing, inhouse OS development, hardware licensing and online servers into account. Why they feel they belong in the market to begin with is beyond me. I also don't understand why they make Mice and Keyboards.
MS might also try to take technology from the Zune and make some sort of portable xbox handheld/smartphone combo in the future.
My advice for MS. Keep making crappy Windows phones that somehow are "more serious" for business cuz it has tons of (crappy) options like keyboards, flashing lights, SD cards and END and SEND buttons on the front. I don't want to see these guys in suits using an iPhone anyway and bringing its cool down.
Best of luck with the next windows mobile. I am sure it won't be half as good as iPhone 1.0 and without a shred of original ideas or imagination.

Amazing. This is the first time in many months that I have heard the word ZUNE mentioned anywhere.
I completely forgot that it ever existed.

I actually think this news sucks.
The Zune was a pretty valiant effort, with the Zune HD in particular being a damn nice piece of hardware. At the very least its presence kept a small fire lit under Apple's ass.
RIP, Zune.

For the Zune to have succeeded, Microsoft would have had to seriously undercut the iPod price wise. But it was too little too late.

My son moved from a "not too bright" LG phone to a Dell Streak, and is looking at buying a large SD card to add to it so he can migrate all his Zune music onto the Streak. I think this illustrates that, at least to my son, the Zune sort of stagnated. I gotta say there are some interesting features in the Zune, some of which did not seem to be present in iPods. But it just didn't stay as fresh as the iPod line, and that has to have hurt it.

RIP, Zune.
The difference is that now there is tons of competition from other smartphones and that is keeping the fire burning under Apple to improve the iphone and in turn the ipod touch. I won't miss the zune.

This video has minimal to do with the Zune but I like to bring it up every once and awhile just to have a good laugh.

No surprise here. Microsoft's mobile development power is focused 100% on Windows Phone 7 and the market for PMPs, thanks to smartphones, is going to start shrinking quickly.
