Java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 Release 2 delivers improved reliability and compatibility for Java on Mac OS X v10.4. This release includes Java 2 Platform Standard Edition versions 1.3.1_16 and 1.4.2_09.
Now, what about people who've installed Java 2 SE 5.0 Release 1, downloaded from Apple's site? It it still worth installing?

Java 1.3, 1.4 and 5 are three different JVMs. Apps and applets written for 1.4.x doesn't necessarily work in Java 5.

Do not download and install this update.

It will cause the following:

1. Surf the web for a while
2. Hang in Safari loading a page (try Fox or MSNBC)
3. Cannot launch applications (bouncing dock forever)
4. Spinning pinwheel and total freeze
5. Forced reboot

Check the MacFixIt web page.

How do I go back to the old Java?

Unfortunately I can reproduce this. Had to reboot my Mac.

I can't tell whether that's the fault of the Java update, but I do have the bug too.

It's unclear whether the Java update is doing this, but that's what MacFixIt is claiming.

I am getting identical symptoms but I don't remember installing any Java update recently. I will check the version once I'm home.

It started occurring right after I installed the new iTunes, but I can't see how that can cause this kind of behavior.

This has happened to me about 4 times so far.

I wasn't aware of any methods that were deprecated being removed between 1.4 and 1.5. What about 1.5 would render an app that otherwise worked with 1.4 non-functional?
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

An app that connects to a J2EE app server (like JBoss) where both sides needs to use the same JVM.

I haven't had any crashes but I have had problems on my PB17. And it is from the java update because the mini (which wasn't updated) still works fine when accessing some sites.

The macfixit report mentions the problem but no workarounds or temp solutions.

This is a computer-generated message and needs no signature.

I did not install the Java update, but I'm getting the system freezes during surfing. I don't think it's related to the new Java.

It's apparently a problem with the lookupd service and certain Java-based sites.

From an Apple Discussions thread, thanks to Trond Simensen, a possible workaround:

In the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal), do this:

sudo mkdir /etc/lookupd
sudo sh -c "echo TimeToLive 300 > /etc/lookupd/hosts"
sudo sh -c "echo ValidateCache NO >> /etc/lookupd/hosts"

Restart, sleep, unplug your network cable briefly, or turn AirPort off then on. This will disconnect you from the network temporarily, which automatically restarts the lookupd service, and enable the changes above which apparently gets around the problem. You can surf the net as usual.

I did this last night and I haven't experienced any freezes so far.

A further detailed explanation about lookupd and a little program which works around the problem:

http://www.dshadow.com/software/unlockupd/

I learned a lot here.

Apparently, a running lookupd is critical to the system.

any new reports on this update and whether it's the cause of problems? I've held off on updating, but figured it's time to find out what's goin' on.....

No problems with the Java update here (while surfing with Safari, at least), I installed it a while ago.
