On tonight's episode of American Dad, the CIA received a note from a cyber-terrorist written in a language they didn't know. In this opening scene, the language written on the note was CLEARLY made of Japanese Hiragana characters, at least mostly.
Later in the episode, there was another note shown, only this time it was just scribbles, or something totally unrecognizable to me.
Then yet later in the episode, Steve Smith and his friends recognized a third note as being written in Elvish, when this time it was again CLEARLY Japanese. Since one of Steve's friends IS Japanese and speaks it in the show, I thought this would tie into it somehow.
Now I know this is pointless nitpicking and geeky complaining, but I want to talk about it. I know not everyone watching would be able to recognize Japanese, but was this done on purpose or are the animators (or whoever responsible) really that ignorant? It seems to me if they wanted it to be Elvish, they could have used real Tolkien Elvish (probably would have been well recognized!) or just made up something themselves.

The show is a comedy. Did you consider the idea that it's a joke?

I generally prefer Family Guy to American Dad, but I will give this episode points for the guy dressed up as Thundarr the Barbarian. BTW, did you consider that the elves in question might be Japanese?

I have a theory that American Dad is just a huge practical joke by Seth McFarlane and crew on Fox.
"Oh, yeah, you cancelled us, but we're popular enough that you brought us back AND gave us another show. So we'll make this one actually be crappy, and you can't cancel it! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!"

I'm actually liking American Dad. I though last night's ep was at least as funny as Family Guy. I mean, come on. Starwars Kid cameo? Awesome.
Also, the show is most likely animated in Korea, so maybe the language joke lies in there.

There's an episode of Star Trek: Voyager where you see the Mac mouse pointer moving around on the screen.
(Voyager had a bunch of G4 Cubes that powered the visual effects on the monitors.)

I enjoy American Dad almost as much as Family Guy. I think I've said it before in here, but Roger the alien never fails to make me laugh something fierce.
Anyway, my girlfriend, who's Japanese, pointed it out that they were Japanese characters and we both had an extra laugh over that.
Ozmodiar, I agree that busting out the Star Wars kid was awesome.

The thread wandered towards "funny things you notice," so I went on a tangent.

I love American Dad. Cmon... "why does everyone hate the juice?!"
that in itself is classic.
