On my ThinkPad (WindowsXP, Outlook) when I get an email with an animated gif attached, the gif automatically plays.

Can I get them to work in OS X and Mail.app? I really don't want to go through the entire proceedure of saving the file to my hdd, then opening it in QuickTime. I like the way it automatically plays in Windows/Outlook. I just hate Windows in general.

Hopefully, the new Mail.app in Panther will have WebView (Safari like HTML displaying) support, and will play them.

Otherwise, open it in preview and click the play toobar item (if it's not in your toolbar, customize the toolbar and place it in)

good luck
