I have a MBP 15" 2.0 and I mainly use an external viewsonic display.
When browsing the "powerbook setup" thread I noticed that it looked like some people were using external monitors as their main display and the MBP display as the extended desktop.

Is that possible? I want my viewsonic to be the main display and extend onto the MBP display.
If possible does it have to be primary on the left and MBP on the right?
TIA

Yes. Under system preferences, choose display settings. You will see a rendering of your displays and you can postition them in whatever configuration you want. You will also notice a "menu bar" in the rendering. Simply drag that to the bigger display, and your menu bar and dock will now be visible on the Vewsonic and it will be your 'main' display.
