Okay, rather a controversial heading.
A couple of weeks ago I did the right thing and ordered iLife from the Apple store in the UK. It finally arrived yesterday.
In the meantime, Apple's SUCP advised me that iPhoto 2 and iMovie 3 were available so I happily installed them.
When iLife arrived (box contains 2 CD's and an advert for .Mac only!!!) I stuck in the CD and it said that newer versions of one of the apps already exists and cancelled the installation.
Because I'm not using iDVD, there has been no advantage in buying iLife. I might as well have waited a week or so and got it for free from Apple.
Not sure what the value of buying iLife is...

The "value" in iLife is just that you get iDVD (too big to download for free from Apple)...we knew ALL ALONG that the iMovie 3, iPhoto 2, and iTunes 3 were going to be FREE downloads.
I don't get why you are upset...

Uh .. because you wasted your money on it means no one else should get it for iDVD?
It your own damn fault if you ask me but that's just me.

Since you don't use iDVD, what was the reason that made you buy iLife?

I have to agree here. Why buy iLife if you don't have a DVD Burner? I bought it because I have a DVD Burner.

iLife is nice 1) for those that would like iDVD and have the drive to support it, 2) great for dial-up users, although I can't see anyone paying $49.95 just for the three free apps if they don't use iDVD and 3) makes a great backup CD if you need to reinstall for whatever reason. Next time, read the requirements before buying something, it clearly states on the iLife page that iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie are available for download.

I love iDVD 3, the themes are really amazing, however without the themes this app would not be worth the money...

ha ha... I would only buy it if:
1) I had a dial-up connection
2) I needed iDVD
Other then those two reasons, you are just burning cash... It's like buying a copy of Netscape Navigator... you can do it, but why?

I can't find where to buy navigator, well, I see where you have to pay shipping for the CD, but that's it.

Very harsh people!!!!
Actually, I've been busy that's why I haven't replied earlier. Some of us do have jobs....
I don't remember saying that I was pi$$ed or upset here. It was just a word of caution to others. It is not immediately obvious from Apple's advertising that the only reason you should buy iLife is for iDVD 3.
I am actually ordering a new PowerMac in the next month or so (DP 1.42) and I am sure that iLife will also be included in that anyway.
Being an early adopter I do tend to buy things as soon as they come out. This was a word of warning to others like me. Only buy iLife if you want iDVD 3.
If nothing else I have helped Apple's cash flow. Oh well, it's only money.....

From http://www.apple.com/ilife/ -
"How to get iLife
Purchase iLife for $49.00. The package includes iTunes 3, iPhoto 2, iMovie 3 and iDVD 3 on a two disc CD and DVD-ROM set.
Downloads are available for iTunes 3, iPhoto 2 and iMovie 3."
Honestly, if you bought it and you didn't need it, it's really your own fault.

Sorry to read that you "wasted" your money on iLife. iLife's website did show that iPhoto and iMovie would be available as downloads and Steve did mention this in his keynote.
Look at the bright side. You have a CD backup...albeit a somewhat expensive one.
I definitely will enjoy the use of iLife. Gotta hate that name, though. I swear it sounds like a name my mom might think of (my mom is not the greatest marketing genius of all time).

I think it's funny that several people on this board joked about getting an "iLife" quite a while before the name was announced.

Yeah. It was not exactly a complimentary name for Apple to have chosen.

I bought it and I cannot use iDVD as I have an external burner and a laptop, but when I see a good application; I do not mind purchasing to show support and have the retail cd. I cannot even say how much shareware I buy just to show support for it. I have not even used imovie or iphoto yet, but I have the cd if I want to..

I know what you mean about giving $50 to Apple for iLife, but I would have rather purchased something that I could use...
Like some Pro Speakers or Keyspan Digital Media Remote... but that's just me...

I'd pay the $50 if there were something
"extra" (besides iDVD). For example, if
Apple included extra sound effects or
transitions for iMovie.
Without anything extra, I don't see
any reason to buy it.

The think the original posters point was that even with iPhoto 1 and iMovie 2.1 the upgrade CD doesn't work.
I have an iBook, bought iLife for iDVD for my iMac with a Superdrive and when using the CD to install iLife on the iBook it just said... "You've got newer versions installed, you can't use this CD to return to an older version of this software" or something like that.
In other words the install CD included in iLife is faulty!

No he's not. He's saying they wouldn't install over the updated versions, which is OBVIOUS, they're updated.

If you don't need iLife because you don't have a DVD burner, try and sell it on eBay if you want. You'll at least recover some of your money that way.

Thanks The Evener & edddeduck. Actually, the money's not that important to me. It's only 40. Was just disappointed that there wasn't any value in buying it. I will buy a new mac with DVD burner in it soon anyway.
Cheers.... Jordan

Yeah I'll sell one.
The plot thickens. I actually bought two copies. One for me and one for my mate. He does have a DVD burner. He's been away for the last week so hasn't picked up his copy.
Therefore, I can give him my copy and sell one brand spanking, never been opened copy to you if you want. Drop me a line on jordan(at)gol(dot)com.
Cheers....
