Seriously, I heard this after calling someone in Texas to discuss an Airport Base problem with a local line into our offices. (Person is *closely* affiliated with Apple and I've known this person for a while - we camp down in the Keys together.) We were discussing the merits of the MacBook Pro and the topic came up.

He said that Apple is seriously thinking of going after the PC notebook market.

Think it'll happen?

I guess they'll call it the "PCBook" and sell it along with the "MacBook."

Seems plausible since they're slowly inching their way towards the PC platform in various ways.

i cant see any thing to stop them.
A lot of mac fanatics wont be happy about that though.
Would it still be able to justify such a high price tag without the supirior os though

A lot of Mac folks were unhappy about the switch to Intel, also, but Jobs did it anyway.

Now the move to Intel begins to make a lot more sense...

The switch to intel now seems to be the only way apple can carry on making the best computers you can buy. I think to an extent he had no choice but to change to intell. With IBM g5 chips taking up to much power for laptops.

I think Apple are already going after the PC notebook market with the MacBook.

1) Why do you need Windows when you have Tiger?
2) You can probably run Windows on a MacBook.

He coulda gone to AMD instead. God knows I was begging for that before the eventual release of the G5s.

i dont think a mac without tiger would sell that well. They might release a mac with two opperating systems. I heard something about a patent to do with instant switching between os. To me the best part of an apple computer is the os.

the MacBook is the 'PCBook. An intel x86 will let you run whatever the heck you want on it, Linux, Windows, Mac.

Should be pretty simple to partition your disk, install OS X on one and Windows on the other. Or, 3 partitions for OS X, Windows, and Linux.

To tell you the truth, they probably could discount the price a bit and offer a machine without an OS or with Windows with the costs built in. This might drop all prices in general as they would probably gain a bit more market share. I know a ton of people that think apple hardware is sexy as hell and would definitely buy the machine if it was windows ready even for the high apple prices. They are regarded in the PC realm as very well built machines (just with an OS that not everyone wants to use). Now that you can use windows, I'm sure you'll see some people doing just that. I know that I personally will load windows and probably linux (especially if you can boot off an external drive) when I get a MacBook Pro this comming summer. That is, of course, unless the gaming market now starts to port more things over to OSX. OSX is a hell of an os, and my favorite by far. Linux is great to play with, and windows has it's uses (gaming, some specific win only software which I hate).

Hi Cody,

I believe in Steve Jobs and know that he has made a wise decision.

Hope that all is well with my friend.
