is it possible to get true surround sound from my 17" 1.67mhtz Powerbook? the only audio out is a single headphone jack... is there perhaps a usb audio out device that will create true surround sound?

The headphone jack doubles as optical out, but you need a special type of optical cable to use it. I think it is sold on the apple web site. I haven't tried it, but I would think it would do DD 5.1 from a DVD.

I have a sonica theater hooked up to my logitech z5500 system and it works great. The newer powerbooks with the optical out could be hooked up to such speakers with an optical cable alone. The cable is not apple branded or anything, you should be able to buy it at any stereo store. My old old minidisc player uses the same cable to digitally record.
