Yes, the Mini's also got a speed bump. They are still on Core Duo though, while the iMacs were bumped to Core 2 Duo.

It is also available on the US store, I am surprised no one else saw it.

Looks great and the prices have fallen as well.

I can now get a 24 inch iMac for the same price as I paid for a 20 inch G5 iMac 2 years ago.

The new machine as so much more as well - Intel Dual processors, Dual Layer Drive, 1Gb Memory, iSight, Remote, 250GB disc, better amplifier, far better graphics card.

Quite simply stunning!!

I now have to justify buying one, I can always give the G5 to mother to replace her G4 Mac mini.

This is absolutely fantastic. And for your cheapos, the education iMac is now the base version.

However, let the complaining begin: No video upgrade for the 17 and 20" iMacs with the Core 2s. Only the 24" gets the better card.

Had confirmation from Apple :-

Your order should ship on or before 20.09.2006.

We estimate that it will be delivered to your shipping address on or before 27.09.2006.

Seems a long way away!

Hi Folks: Believe me, I lust for a 24" iMac. I think it is a nice package, with the new graphic cards, 2 gigs of RAM, and the 500gig drive. But...

What do I need 24" of screen real estate for on my computer at home? I ask because I'd like to hear some of the benefits from such a big screen. I told my wife, "hey! widescreen size, coupled with the upcoming iTunes movies, etc., this sucker becomes a nice TV, we can put it upstairs, etc." and she replied: "Don't we have a nice TV already?" I thought the iMac was for work, games for the kids, and connecting to the internet..."

Rats! So, help me sell the bigger one? What else besides the better graphics cards does it have from the 20"?

Thanks,

Scampi

Exactly! It was speculation about a possible 23 inch iMac NOT what this thread is about at all.

This is about the actual 24 inch iMac that can out today.

The thread title is much more accurate for the subject we are discussing.

Read more carefully.... he has not bought a 24 inch iMac yet, he wants us to help him justify the purchase by giving examples of why the big screen is better. There is no need to be offensive, just because you don't read post carefully. I think you owe him an apology!

Here are my thoughts :-

1. Much easier to work on documents without having to scroll up and down in them, as you can see the full page. In fact you can see two full pages side by side.

2. Having multiple apps open at the same time is much better on a bigger screen, no need to hide them or cover with other windows.

3. Much better to edit photos, more detail without the need to zoom.

4. It just feels very liberating having all the desktop space!

The 24 inch also has Firewire 800, which will be great as I have just bought a 600Gb external drive with Firewire 800.

It makes my 20" look so small...

I guess if you are trying to sell your wife on the 24", just look her straight in the eye, and say, "Honey, you know bigger is better". That "might" work...

World of Warcraft: Actual Size!

Seriously, playing on my 20" is an immersive experience, this would just take it that much further. Get the 256 meg card, though, with 30% more pixels than my 20" you are going to need the extra power. I have the 128 and it's not bad, but it's bordeline on the display I have. I know they are different brands of cards, but with a display that big (2.3 million pixels!) you're going to want the extra video RAM...

Question about graphics: Is the base card on the 24" enough to watch full screen HD video? I don't really know squat about video and I'm not a big gamer, but I'd like to be set up for the new video store announcements next week even though I gather it's unlikely they'll be selling movies in full HD. Basically, my question comes down to the need for the higher end vid card if I am not really into games.

Also, the 2.33 cpu update seems unnecessary. A 10% boost? Probably not noticeable by me.

Otherwise, I am sold! I've been waiting for this update for a several months.

Well, my 20" iMac with the CoreDuo (no "2" in that) arrived Monday, August 28, so I guess I will get on the horn to Apple and ask for a credit based on the price of the new model. It's a BTO, so I guess I can't return it, though.

funny, no announcement, just a quiet release.
and 24", after all the 23" speculation.

have been planning to augment my 12" powerbook with an imac;
that 20" looks really good right now...

wow...quite the upgrade. i dont see any reason for apple to release a small tower with this line of imacs. nice gpu, 3gb of ram, great screen, fw 800, accepts large hard drives...i think im pretty satisfied with the line once the mbp gets a nice lil bump. good job apple.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

This happened to a friend when the intels imacs were introduced last year. He had just recieved a G5 imac BTO, the next week the intel imacs were introduced. Apple took it back and exchanged it without a hassle.

Oh my god!!! The iMacs are real computers now!!!!!

I don't believe it!!! Every complaint I had about them has just been shredded, pulverized, and nuked.

3GB of ram, a 7600GT/256mb in the 24" as BTO!!!!! They actually have a nice video card as an option in an imac!! This is the first time in history!!!

Oh, My, God!

The upside is that now we can all start speculating of the xMac that will be using Conroe...

Really like the 7600 GT though. Too bad you need a 24"er to get it.

The 7600 GT is a blessing from Jobs! Seriously.

In fact, had this thing been out before I ordered my Mac Pro/23" ACD, I might've ordered a maxed out 24" iMac instead...

An Apple product intro on a Wednesday?! What has the world come to...

Oh, and I also find it odd that you can have 3 GB RAM, but not 4....

And finally, Apples entire line is now dual core....
iMac Core Duo 1.83 Ghz | 1.25GB RAM | 160HD, MacBook Core Duo 1.83 Ghz | 13.3" | 60HD | 1.0GB RAM

Apple's iMac graphics page shows the 2.33 iMac with 7300GT running the Quake 4 timedemo at 47fps.

Apple's Mac Pro graphics page shows the 3.0 Mac Pro with 7300GT running the Quake 4 timedemo at 35fps.

The merom iMac is faster than the xeon Mac Pro using the same graphics card?! Can someone with the Mac Pro and Quake 4 validate this result?

Oooo... the 24 inch includes firewire 800!!! So, 2 things; one) no midrange mac coming, and two) the iMac can be used as a pro machine for those who don't want/need the power of a MacPro

"The Versatile 24
If you’d like to show off your new 24-inch iMac — in a kiosk, hung on a wall (as pretty as a picture), or mounted on an articulating arm — the optional VESA mount adapter offers considerable flexibility, letting you choose any VESA-compliant mounting solution."

Something that has been missing since the first G5 iMacs. Hmmm....all the cool new stuff is only available in the 24"er...the only thing that seems to have changed in the 17's and 20's is the processor...makes it seem like maybe the previous gen could be upgraded. (It would cost $450-$500, but...)

I think that all testing they do is at 1280x1024, and maybe with the iMac they tested it at 1024x768. Who knows?

Also, the pixels on the 24" screen are more spread apart, or larger cause it's the same resolution as the 23" ACD. That might have something to do with it.

edit: I ran a timedemo test of doom 3 on a Rev A 20" iMac, at Low Quality at 640x480 it got 60fps.

There is no way in hell it got what they show on that page with a 7300GT, if they were at native resolution.

Which makes the iMac numbers even MORE impressive. The native resolution of the iMac has 1 million more pixels than resolution the Mac Pro was tested at.

The iMac graphics comparison doesn't mention the video quality in the test, while the Mac Pro one mentions that the test was made at High Quality. In fact, the iMac test barely mentions anything, so it's close to useless.

Basically, my question comes down to the need for the higher end vid card if I am not really into games.

Also, the 2.33 cpu update seems unnecessary. A 10% boost? Probably not noticeable by me.

Otherwise, I am sold! I've been waiting for this update for a several months.

Just bumping my own post since it seems to have been lost in the fury. Anyone with some graphics/video knowledge care to fill me in?

thanks,

Also, the pixels on the 24" screen are more spread apart, or larger cause it's the same resolution as the 23" ACD. That might have something to do with it.
Resolution is the only thing that matters here. The physical size of the display is absolutely irrelevant. The fact that the pixels in a 24" display are slightly larger than in a 23" has zero influence on the graphics performance. Zero.

It would have been a bad idea for the iMac. The current 17" iMac at full blast (including the display) puts out less heat then the Conroe alone. Add to this that chipsets for Conroe are hotter then chipsets for Merom, and I would'nt be suprised if the same was true for Videocards too.

Apple definitely wants the iMac line to fill the midrange, but many will still be turned off by the built-in display and lack of expansion options.

Not true, tooki! Bigger pixels take longer to draw because more light is needed to illuminate them.

OK. It doesn't.
