For your convenience I have rounded up the worst states in the US, and you may vote to select which one you think sucks the most.
Also, I did not take into account any state that is not on the east coast, because as far as most people are concerned, those states do not exist.
Go forth and vote!

BTW, we all know which state is going to "win."
But I forgot to include North Carolina, so forgive me.

Incorrect title. Should be:

Then, once again, your poll title is inaccurate.

OK, to make you feel better, if Canada were a state (I mean, I don't think it is.. it's just a territory like Puerto Rico I think) it would not have made the list.

Worst at what? California easily tops as worst in funding for education.

TEXASS.
bible thumpers there are responsible for George Bush which in turn is responsible for most of the world's trouble. NJ is awful but they can hardly make case compared to Texass.

OK, I understand New Jersey and Florida. I think these will tie, but only because many people who have never been to Florida will vote for Jersey.
CT and MA, what's the difference? Why not just say New England and get it over with? All of them together would barely count as a real state anyway.
PA? Not even close to worst when you consider Delaware, Louisiana, Kansas, West Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, and Idaho. Maybe it's included so people from there can pick themselves in a wishy-washy, "couldn't possibly choose" kind if way.

your list is way too small, and what's the selection criteria, crime, taxes, lack of charitable giving?
I live in Mass where the taxes are going up and up and up, but that doesn't mean its the worst state, I rather like living here but it may come to a point where I cannot afford to live here because of state legislature cannot figure out that you need to cut service in times of trouble not take what little $$ from the citizens of the state.

I can't vote for Florida. My dream location is Clearwater. I want my ashes spread there.
I voted Mass. That's where Barney Frank is from. He's an idiot if there ever was one, and I feel sorry for the people there to have to have him in Congress for their state.

I like the fact that two out of five options in this poll are not states at all.
Also, the worst US state is definitely Hawai‘i. Just sayin’.

They're states, for sure. They have stars on the US Flag. If they were not states, there wouldn't be stars to represent states that call themselves Commonwealths. I live in the Communistwealth of Virginia. The state employees don't like it when you call their state a Communistwealth. I did that at the Treasurer's office when I was paying my property tax on my car. I could see the anger in their faces. Priceless!

Mississippi has gotten a lot better in the last twenty years, but despite how Gulfport is nice (I lived in North Biloxi for a total of about 10 years), there are tons of problems still in place there. But then, MS has basically four major regions, with the Coast and the Delta being more problematic than Central and North.
Florida has its problems, but again, it's several different regions. How is Pensacola related to Miami, other than having the same state abbreviation? Regionalism is a problem there too.
Texas isn't perfect, but you can't blame everyone here for Dallas and Houston rich white folk's voting in George (considering that places like Austin, San Antonio, and much of South Texas vote consistently Democratic no matter who is running). We have some real issues, but we also have one of the lowest foreclosure rates in the country-in part because our Legislature has been slow to undo a lot of protections put in place as long ago as the Great Depression. If the Lege could just get out of bed with business and start representing actual voters, then a lot of other issues could start being resolved.
I have only been through Pennsylvania via airports, and never have visited NY, NJ or Mass, so I can't say from direct experience, but I think EVERY state has a bunch of problems that could give the impression of being "worst" worthy...

Exactly. The folks who haven't picked New Jersey are the ones who've never been there.

That's one reason why I don't like it - too many retired old people and old person restaurants. Old people smell like cabbage, I do not like them.

I had to vote for NJ only because of the F'd up left turns that drive me nuts!
But where the hell is California? That is by far the worst state in the union. As I tell people that ask why I moved from that state to the East Coast: there is a reason there is a RED star on the state flag!
Later,
Me

It's not just the old people though, it's the relentlessly hot climate, all of the dumb tourists, and plastic-ness everywhere. I spent a lot of time in Florida when I used to work the cruise ships and always had a hard time understanding why anybody would want to live, let alone retire in the state, no offense!

No personal income tax. I know several retired people who moved to Florida not because they wanted to leave New York State, but because they couldn't afford to stay here on their retirement savings after factoring in income and property taxes, but could afford to go to Florida.
