How do you encode imported CDs in iTunes?

Just curious. I have no idea which is best, I just no higher bit-rate is good. So which do you use, and why?
EDIT: Im using AAC, 224 bit rate... not sure why...

I convert everything to MP3/160.
I really can't tell the difference between 160 and the higher bitrates. AAC files aren't compatable with my TiVo or my DVD player.
AAC might technically be better, but I'd rather play it safe and use a format that I know will be supported for a long time.

Hmmm, what kind of speakers do you use for playback? I can easily tell the difference between 160 and 256 when listening through my stereo system's Infinity speakers (rather than my eMac's pathetic little ones).
Oh, and I rip mp3/320.

i use AAC 128 because i can't really tell the difference between that and mp3. but i can see how you would want to use mp3 in case aac dies...nevver thought about that

128kbps AAC. Works great with my iPod mini, and I don't have any devices aside from my stereo that I want to export too and I do that over an audio cable...

Dantax surround set - don't know the model number, can't be bothered to climb around under my desk looking for it just now  . Sometimes I can hear a slight difference, but nothing I'd notice unless I was consciously looking for it.
What makes a lot of difference, however, is the crappy outlet from my crappy laptop to the surround set. I can hear a difference very clearly between playing music off my computer and playing it via my DVD player (don't have a stereo anymore), even if I'm playing the same CD (as in not ripped, but playing the CD directly in the computer too).

Always MP3. In terms of the bitrate, back in the day I used to do it at 128 and now at 192.

Probably AAC. The whole point of AAC is that it sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate, so for equivalent sound you can cut the bitrate and save some disk space.
Try it and see for yourself.

Stuff that I really like and have a tendency to listen to when I just want to focus on listening to music and do nothing else I encode as lossless. Unfortunately I can't spare the hard drive space to do my entire collection in lossless, so most of the stuff is encoded as 192kbps AAC. I find the 128kbps stuff from the iTMS to be passable, but I can definitely tell the difference and prefer stuff I've encoded myself at a higher bitrate.
Ahh, the curse of good speakers/headphones.

I don't have an iPod or other portable music player, and I'm picky about sound quality, so I use AIFF. I play the music back through a pair of B&W LM-1 speakers connected to a Creek 4330 Mk. II integrated amp with Audio Quest Jade speaker cable.

typically 192aac, kids songs 128aac, music i'm very fond of 256aac. i'm thinking of trying out apple lossless, but i wonder if 320aac would be a smaller file, playable on my older ipod, and undistinguishable to me.

To avoid the lesser files from getting jealous of the new ones I encode with MP3 at 192Kbps, which on my home stereo (via iPod) sounds so damn good anyways that I really think anything better is for bragging rights.
