Networking company D-Link today announced it is now shipping the spherical AC1900 Wi-Fi USB Adapter (DWA-192). Designed to bring faster speeds and extended range to laptops and desktop PCs, the DWA-192 boasts 3x3 internal antennas, operation on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, and speeds of up to 1900Mbps.

The new adapter is ideal for use in larger homes and for users who need a faster Wi-Fi connection. The AC1900 Adapter is backward compatible with 802.11n/g/a technology, and works with all brands of Wi-Fi routers and range extenders, making it a simple way to upgrade a laptop or desktop PC to 11AC speeds.

The AC1900 Wi-Fi USB Adapter also features Advanced AC SmartBeam technology, which directs bandwidth to improve the Wi-Fi signal between the connected router and the DWA-192. SmartBeam provides a faster connection for the laptop or desktop that is connected to the USB adapter for HD gaming and streaming -- activities sensitive to lag.

The adapter works on Windows 7 and newer, as well as OS X 10.8 and above. Retail price for the DWA-192 is $100.

If hardware manufactures can make smartphones as small as they do, then routers are going to have to get a lot smarter and a lot smaller.

This isn't even a router. It's a USB 3.0 802.11ac adapter for desktops and laptops!
