This seems to be getting worse with each update on Mac OS X.

Then again, could it be me??

Whenever I wake my PB up from sleep, it seems to take forever before it is responsive. This has not always been the case. I get the SPOD on any window for a good minute or two before it returns to normal. This happens whenever I wake the computer up from sleep or switch accounts through FUS. This happens on both the PB and the G5 so it's not a hardware thing.

I was wondering if it might be the dashboard widgets that are doing it as they seem to get feeds from the internet. Perhaps they are hijacking the machine.

As the machines are so unresponsive I can't really run the Activity Monitor to see what's hijacking the CPU.

Appreciate any assistance from anyone or please comment if you are finding the same thing...

TIA,

Jordan

Hello Jordan ..

You could try these steps ...

1. Start up in Safe Mode .. this will run the "Repair Disk" utility.
Be sure the computer is turned off.
Press the power button.
Just after you hear the startup tone (NOT BEFORE), press and hold down
the shift key.

Release the shift key when you see the start up screen with the gray
background with the Apple logo and the progress indicator.
During the startup, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
To leave the Mac OS X Safe Mode just restart your Mac normally, without
holding any keys during the startup period.

2. Download and Run this ...Onyx
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11582
Go to Automation Pane ..
Check all the boxes EXCEPT
1. Optimize the system
2. Hidden DS Store Files
3. Links between documents and applications

Also choose "Clear All" in the button box for caches. Then execute

These settings perform three basic troubleshooting procedures ...
a. Repair permissions
b. Run Unix maintenance (cron) scripts
c. Clear caches

3. Energy Saver - Set processor performance to "highest" (if applicable)

4. For other causes and solutions ...

It is probably that your Mac isn't running the proper cron jobs. Do you use any apps for that?

You could try more ram, but in your case, I'd bet a quick restart would do wonders.

Get MacJanitor or Onyx or Cocktail or Anacron or something like that. And repair permissions once in a great while.

bergy, Thanks for the detailed advice....

Have done steps 1, 2 and 3. I've never performed any of these housekeeping tasks before. Wasn't sure that you needed to. I thought that most of the normal things were already done for you by the OS.

Will monitor performance over the next few days and see how it goes.

Haven't been able to do the G5 yet as it's in getting fixed. (Grrr, processor failed within 10 days of purchase! Grrr...! )

I've also just noticed for the first time that I only have 256Mb available in this. I could have sworn that I bought 512Mb when I bought the machine. Does anyone know if the 12 inch Powerbook sold in the US around 12 months ago came with 256 or 512. I wonder if something stopped working. Will have to check and see...

Will try some of these on the G5 when I get it back....

Cheers,

Jordan

Yeah - I do on the PB. Will sort that out.

Doesn't explain the same problem on the G5 though.

Will try the hints from bergy on that and see what that does...

I have been having the same problems as the original poster -- but JUST on my laptop. My desktop (and it's nearly 5 years old, though with an upgraded processor)) It was maddening to wake it up; got the beachball forever, programs were extremely slow to load, etc. Four people use the laptop frequently, so I kind of figured it was tons of open programs, etc. But I took other posters' advicxe last night and used MacJanitor (at least I'm pretty sure that was it -- I looked into several).

This morning: no beachball, no lags, no non-responsiveness. It's fabulous.
Try Mac Janitor or Onyx or Cocktail.

Hi Jolt ...
Like I said those settings do the 3 main troubleshooting steps which is usually sufficient ..

OSX automatically optimizes ... if you do it manually it takes forever .. and is unecessary anyway ...

As far as the other two ... here is from Onyx help ... you can judge for yourself. I would probably do the second one but some people get freaked out by the smallest change so it's a personal thing ..

Hidden .DS_Store Files: An invisible file (.DS_Store) maintains various information regarding the folder in which it is located (icon view and positions). On other systems, those files are visible. You can choose to remove them before burning a CD-ROM, for example. This option deletes all .DS_Store files from the hard disk.

- Links between documents and applications: In Mac OS X version 10.3.4 and higher, an alert message appears when you launch a new type of document for the first time. The link between this type of document and the application executed is stored in the "com.apple.LaunchServices.6B.csstore" file in the /Library/Caches/ folder. This command deletes that file and reinits the links between your documents and the applications.
