The TV show.
Didn't watch it much when it was on, but now, for whatever reason, I feel the need to put it in some context.
Why was that the show which captured the country's imagination for over a decade?

Because TJ Hooker was just another cop drama?

T.J. Hooker was one of those shows I wanted to like, because Shat, but could never get into it. Wasn't a genre problem either because I liked CHiPs.
The Fall Guy was similar. Bionic Man is a plus, but could never get into it.
We might as well rename the thread to 80's Television.

My one degree of Shat separation is I used to be pals with Nofee when he lived in Chicago.
What was hilarious is at the time, he would be best described as "lanky". Now he's clearly this bruiser guy.
He's insanely talented. It's a shame he's been typecast.
Just look at the expression on his face. He's brilliant at that kind of comedy.

People loved to hate JR, and they like to look into the lifestyles of the wealthy (the Kardashian Effect). The outcry over shooting him was so extreme ("Who Shot JR?!"), the first time a reaction like that had ever happened, they made the whole event a season-long dream sequence.

I guess I'm going to have to force myself to watch an episode or two.
I'm trying to reconstruct the J.R. character and it's cartoon buffoonery evil.
I mean, it's Larry Hagman doing this... as a Texan.
How is this not comedy?

In terms of the "ostentatious wealth" shows of the 80's, the one I liked was Hart to Hart.
I'm assuming it's ultimately a genre thing. I liked mystery shows and not so much soap operas.
I really liked Hart to Hart though. Almost embarrassingly so.

I probably should, and I already love Hugh Laurie.
His evil seems more contained though from what I've gathered.

It's pretty damned gnarly at times, truly brutal.

And of course, Knotts Landing and The Colbys.
As a dedicated couch potato, I wanted to like those shows, but they never took.
Dallas I watched the most and was most familiar with only because it was so big.

You have your shootings conflated!
J.R. getting shot actually happened. Then they tried to recapture it by shooting Bobby. That was the season they dream sequenced.

I rewatched the Dallas opening credits. Remembered the orchestral part perfectly, but totally forgot the funky porno bass and drums.

Victoria Principal... oh my... I have the `73 Playboy with her in it, her body was amazing, but she hit her stride in her late 30s and early 40s.

I was always a Linda Grey guy.
Never minded them a bit older. I consider it a blessing.
