This morning, as usual, I put my PowerBook to sleep at 8:29am, disconnected the power cord, unplugged the display and networking cables, and brought my PB to work, connecting it to the ethernet network and opening the lid. The display didn't turn on. I was able to ssh in via my trusty iPhone, and I typed "sudo reboot." The weird thing is that my PB didn't reboot (perhaps it just shut down?) See below at 9:10:49. Finally, at 9:13, I held the power key down to shut down.

This is a not uncommon freeze on my computer (switching from the 20" Cinema display and wired ethernet home network to wired ethernet office network without any peripherals). My computer has had an overnight hardware check at an Apple Store, and its hard disk has been verified by DiskWarrior 4.1. I've also reset the PowerManager.

Does this log give any insight into what might be happening? Why wouldn't a reboot work?

Thanks, but is "reboot" somehow defective?

More importantly, can someone help troubleshoot the freeze problem? I've also done an archive and install, but it didn't help.

If your Mac is in a weird, hung state, it won't reboot normally.

I don't see anything out of the ordinary in your log.

Yeah, that's the problem -- I'm totally at a loss as to how to troubleshoot these freezes except by not connecting my PowerBook to the Cinema Display! OS X 10.5.4, by the way (but these freezes started happening in Tiger).

The problem is probably a result of unplugging the display after you have put the computer to sleep. I know if I put my laptop to sleep and then unplug a usb device when I go back to wake it up it does not bring me to the password prompt. What I have to do is usually shut the lid again and wait for the power light to start pulsing. This indicates that it has fully entered sleep. Then reopen the lid and wait a few seconds. Usually, the password prompt shows up and then it goes right back to sleep. Close the lid and wait for the light then reopen. The password prompt will show up again, but after that you should be able to get to your desktop.

A better fix is to unplug everything then put the laptop to sleep.

Yes, I've toyed with the sequence. I use my laptop closed with the Cinema Display as the only display. So if I hot-unplug everything, my laptop will instantly go to sleep (as it is closed), won't it?

I get exactly the same problems on my MacBook, and came up with exactly the same solution (work around actually, I suppose). Occasionally, those steps don't even solve the problem and a forced restart is required (but that is very rare).

I sometimes get the problem, even if I disconnect everything before sleeping the macbook. It's very frustrating.

I sure hope Apple are working on a fix for this.

I believe you have to do 'sudo reboot now'.

You believe wrongly. Reboot is instantaneous... when the system isn't hung. There is no need for a time modifier.
