I use ICQ and I like it a lot, the best thing about it is that it's a stand-alone app.

metal: If you want to learn more about IRC, visit http://www.irchelp.org/ .

I (along with a few others) have an IRC Channel (room) for Macs which would be a good place for you to try out IRC and get help regarding IRC. More info: http://www.openmac.org/ .

caifara, you can't compare irc with icq, that is like comparing a car and a carrot. there are several good scripts for mac, ircle is one of the most used i guess.

IRC and ICQ are not alike in any way, save that they are both Internet Communication software. Also, Ircle is not a script... Ircle is one of the more commonly used IRC clients, you can get it, and many more clients at http://www.versiontracker.com/ .

IRC is used for chatting and transferring files. It is an old, and very powerful protocol. Thousands upon thousands of people use IRC. Many IRC servers linked together make up one network, an example of this is SlashNet, or NewNet, or Efnet.
