I don't know enough of the options for web dev to make this a poll, but as I get into more complex designs I start wondering about others' choices...

• Omnigraffle?
• A professional programming tool?
• Graph paper?
• Cocktail napkin?

How complex do they have to get before you move from (say) napkin to a software app?

nice app called SQLEditor for mapping out your database relations. other than that I use pen and paper or sometimes powerpoint to do a flow diagram (for the client).

I have a little notebook that I carry around and use for design. I don't very often plot out the structure because I don't very often make sites so complex that I need a structure map. Page design usually comes out of illustrator. I haven't done a lot of DB relation design. That's where I suspect I'd need more power. DB design, and scripting flow...

Well, that's kind of amazing for a first reaction... the high tech people using the lowest tech aids

The SQLEditor looks very interesting, Mania. I'll definitely have to test drive it as I'm doing more complex MySQL designs.

I really liked the design system built into GoLive before they killed their dynamic libraries in CS, CSx. You could layout a page map and name the pages and GL would create them, using templates if so inclined. You could then add new and notes to old as you go along to show design updates and progress including link checks.

I have used mindmap for some design stuff - free!
Concept Draw and others are available. Visio also. But I'm cheap.

Don't forget even MS Word has drawing parts. Canvas and Illustrator too.

It really a matter of how deep you want to get into things. Are you gone it to make it your development bible? If so, make sure it has the features you need to make it work in a manner you are compatable with.

Talk about synchronicity...

I just "unintentionally" hit the link on the MacNN page that was announcing an upgrade for "ConceptDraw":
http://www.conceptdraw.com/en/produc...main.php?macnn

Except for that $249 price tag...
Sounds awfully interesting (once I'm making so much money I *need* to plunk that down).
