A bit more than I was planning to spend on a music gizmo (I'm NOT complaining...I have to see it first).

Funny...$249 is where I was hoping the original 5GB iPod would be priced when it was introduced.

I like how "the best $50 you'll spend" over a flash player will get you an iPod mini, but an extra $50 over that will get you an extra 11GB of storage. I wonder what the battery life will be like on these...

The mini iPod, although not really appealing to anyone other than teenage girls and joggers looks like a preview of the next iPod: i.e. thinner with the new nav pad.

Is the mini flash based or hard drive based? I still use an old Rio 500 when playing along to songs in my rehearsal studio as hard drive based players skip from the drums.

ummm.... hehe....

it was more like a Apple music special. ive seen better macworlds thats for sure, but it wasnt terrible.

as far as the iPodminis..... umm...
The Good:
-i like the brushed metal
-i like the clickable scroll wheel...that needs to be on the iPod itself
-1000 songs so seems less of a compromise
- arm band

The Bad:
-$250...too expensive (although i understand wh ythey had to price it at that...but dosent seem like a good marketing decision to introduce this product)
-the screen looks like it could have been a little bigger..there's a lot of room between it and the scroll wheel

The Ugly:
-do i have to say it ?...those colors almost made me cry (except for the 'titanium' one)

The unknown:
-supported audio formats
-headphones with remote ?
-battery life ?

im happy with my 10GB 1st gen iPod (might upgrade later this year to a 20, but i hate to diss the miniPod before it's out of the gates, but i feel at that price point...it isnt gonna do all that well. seems like they just put the thing together for Macworld.

Mark me up as another disappointed customer. $250 for the iPod mini is waaay too much. That won't even put a dent in the market they're targeting. They should have aimed at the $150 range (1-2 GB?) and attacked both the low and high-end flash player market. If this were basketball, I'd call it a brick.

Other than that, GarageBand looks very sweet. And as a Pepsi drinker, I'm looking forward to the new campaign (and seeing what Pepsi comes up with for their marketing campaign).

Highlight of the keynote for me? When Steve's demoing GarageBand and says, "(I'll) go get a woody." Then quickly mentions something about a string bass or something or other

They could have taken 2 gigs off of that and sold "500 songs in your pocket" for $175-199.

It would have made a world of difference.

Sigh. Maybe we'll get some goodies over the next few weeks. Didn't that happen after a previous MacWorld?

I'm sticking with my el-cheapo CD-RW MP3 player for the car for now. I may splurge on the 15GB iPod sometime, though.

EDIT: And not that I really notice when I'm in a restaurant, but I'm primarly a Coke drinker.

What is funny about Steve is he claims that 31% of the market is $100-200 flash players and other 31% is $0-100 flash players. He said he wanted to target the $100-200 ones. I figured by that he meant $150. NOT $250!! How can you be going after that market group when you are over the price by a considerable amount. Even $199 would be okay. I'm not buying an iPod until i can get a NEW one for less than $150.

i agree.

a 1000 soungs on your arm is catchy, but the price will just scare ppl away.
100 songs seems liek overkill when ur going after the high end flash market. 500 would have been the sweet spot.

I agree. As much as Cleveland morning radio sucks (talk talk talk talk) I'm just going to have to splurge for the 15GB model sometime and justify the extra purchase to myself somehow (FW hard disk backup? Solitaire machine [I have that on my Palm]?)

I didn't think it was a bad MacWorld. I've seen worse. I figured Apple would update the iLIfe Apps. Some are showing some age. iPhoto for example looks like a HUGE improvement. iMove and iDVD are definitely an imporvement. I just Made a DVD and when the new iLife comes out I think I'm going to remake it. The XServe needed the upgrade so that was something that was more than needed. Also Garage Band is pretty cool. Much easier than Soundtrack for sure. The iPod Mini. I think I'm going to be buyikng one of those for my mom. She does a few things but does not need anything close to 15 gigs and the size would be perfect for her. 249 while it seems high to me I don't think it is too badly priced. Let's look at it this way. If you have a flash player or a mini MP3 player that takes SD card or things like that and it comes minimum with 256meg for 199 if you buy just one or 2 more SD card it is not even close to the mini's cpacity. Second. You have to keep swapping out the cards. So yes while it seems a bit more it really isn't. For 50 bucks more it is definitly worth it to me.

4GB $249

Main questions.

1. What is the battery life
2. Why can I still not connect it directly to my digital camera.
3. Will this thing be bootable.

In any case they dropped the 15GB down to from $529 to$449 here in Australia, got love the $Aud right now.

I'm guessing $349 for the mini when it arrives over here and $199 for you guys over there by April

Also, Steve should have had the balls to tell the audience that he is now charging us for iMovie and iPhoto.

I loved how you could hear crickets when he announced the price of the mini. I think he was expecting a cheer.

The criticisms here are very similar to when the original iPod was released: too expensive, etc.

The iPod mini is all about size, not capacity; it's roughly 40% less in volume and weight than the 40GB iPod. It's smaller than my Nokia 8260 phone and weighs less. Like most Apple products, the iPod mini needs to be held to be appreciated.

I can't believe people are bitching about Apple giving us more choices (actually, I can). It seems as if too many people have drunk the rumormill kool-aid and actually believed Apple would intro a hardware product for $99.

Well I'll add my 2c.

Garageband, looks interesting, but not for me.

Ipod mini WAAAAAAAAAAY overpriced. At $199 they'd sell loads, at $249 I doubt it, people will pony up the extra for the 15Gb ipod.

iLife. Bugger. In the past 12 months I've bought 2 powerbooks, panther and now they want me to fork out extra for a copy of iphoto that's been useless until now. That sucks. iPhoto has never worked well for me because I have so many photos, and now I'll have to pay for the ability to view them all. I think I'll probably just stick to photoshop elements and freeware slideshow software.

I just really can't justify the extra for that. I don't have a video cam, so imovie and idvd aren't worth much to me. Why not just put them up on the apple site at $10 each, then you can get what you need without paying the extra for what you don't.

Xserve, well that wasn't a surprise.

Not much else of interest. I expected more for the 20th anniversary.

J.

Oh yeah, and who the f@#k spent $29k on Itms?

I agree. People said this about the iPod when it was first released. I'm sure the price will drop. If it is smaller then the iPod is currently do they even make a drive that small? I'm sure Apple had to pay for a Drive that small. Anyway in my view I don't think it is too expensive when you actually put it up against the other MP3 Players. Am I in the RDF maybe but I'm also looking at it as I compared it in my previous post.

I wonder why they are not available for Download though it still might be on the 16th. Anyway, it must be that the Apps have gotten so big that the only way to do it was on CD/DVD. I know iDVD is most of the normal iLife suite from the DVD it's HUGE. So I wonder if that might be the reason.

Sorry to be vulgar and say this, but what a crock of crap that MacWorld is.

REALLY depressing.

Apple has now turned into an iPod seller. Jobs seems to have this to say, "Forget computing! Music and iPods are where the money is!" I mean, C'MON.

No new hardware, period, as far as I'm concerned. A new "mini-iPod" for $250?

What a crock! WHY would anyone buy that? I'd rather spend more money and buy the normal iPod and get a LOT more space and not only that, I'll just buy a freaking iPod on eBay for a LOT less.

STUPID SHOW.

Apple is, as far as I'm concerned, lagging further and further behind the Windows world. I love Mac OS but Apple is now reduced to an iPod company.
