Good news: convinced my dad to move to a Mac Mini.

Bad news: i need to explain how to move his mail (Hotmail) from Outlook Express on his PC to Entourage on the Mac. The only real issue is that he has lots of folders created locally in OE, so maintaing that organization would be nice.

I have read articles about just dragging mail from OE into a folder on the PC, then importing on the mac, but many of those hints were old and i have no way to test it until i travel to where he is.

Question #1: Has anyone recently made the PC OE to Entourage transition? I was hoping the most recent version of Entourage would be smarter so the import would be simple.

Question #2: Is there any software available that does this automatically?

Thanks.

If you can wean him off the Microsoft crap, there's an app that does a seamless transition from Outlook to Apple's Mail:

Little Machines

Looking at that, it appears to work with Entourage, as well. Rats.

Disclaimer: I've not used the software, but I've heard nothing bad about them, either.

Thanks. I saw that before but Outlook Express is not supported in O2M.

Unfortunately (or fortuantely) he likes Entourage, it is closest to Outlook Express, which is one of the reasons i think he was ok with moving. I showed him both Mail and Entourage, and he liked Entourage.

I am doing an experiment now and the dragging and dropping seems to work ok but it means having to replicate the folder structure of OE in the PC file system and then again in Entourage, which i suppose isn't terrible for free. An Import/Export or Automator script would be nice though.

Email Alchemy might be able to help. I used it for a .pst conversion to Apple Mail and it was great. Also check here for some ideas.

If you move him to an IMAP mailbox, the whole migration of email thing becomes a complete non-issue, you don't need to find some conversion tool. The only exception is his contacts and calendar info (in the case of Outlook/Entourage). Is the latter relevant to him?
