This is a very strange problem that I hope doesn't mean my disk is on the way out.

I have a 500 GB drive in an external, no name USB drive case (Eagle Tech) from Newegg. Most of the time it works perfectly fine. However, sometimes it "freezes." What I mean is that in the middle of a copy or sometimes a DVD burn, the activity light on the drive will stay lit, but no further progress occurs in the copy or burn. It just stops. At this point, the process can't be stopped and the disk can't be ejected safely. The Finder gets stuck as well. The only thing to get things moving again is to power down or disconnect the drive. I've never seen behavior like this before. Disk Utility and Disk Warrior find no problems with the drive. Could there be something wrong with the case? Has anybody seen anything like this before?

Do you have another case you can swap the drive into so you can try to rule out one or the other? I'm inclined to believe it's the case if there are no unusual noises associated with the freezing.

it could be a bad sector on the drive causing everything to freeze.

You really need to get the drive connected internally to a PC or Mac and check the SMART values on it.
Also, make sure you have backups of it.

What brand is the hard drive itself? Is it a Seagate 7200.11?

I second seanc's suggestion.

I'm having the exact same problem.

My MacBook Pro will unfreeze if I unplug the firewire cable or turn off the hard drive.

Does anyone know a way to fix this?

That sucks - sounds like the experience I had with a Syquest drive on my LC in the early 1990s.
