DirectoryServices crashes at startup, so I can't use the GUI.
It complains that these two files seem to be corrupt...

/System/Library/Frameworks/DirectoryService.framework/Resources/Plugins/BSD\ Configuration\ Files.dsplug/Contents/Info.plist

/System/Library/Frameworks/DirectoryService.framework/Resources/Plugins/BSD\ Configuration\ Files.dsplug/Contents/version.plist

Can someone paste the contents of these two files? They should be XML files.

(How they became trashed is another very good question)

Thanks...
glas

that is the info.plist file and then the version.plist file.
I love OmniWeb for its ability to open these files with drag n'drop. I use TinkerTool to view hidden files.
Use Terminal and sudo to delete, modify these files or login as root.

Thanks!!

Although DirectoryServices now can start, my GUI login problem is still not fixed, perhaps there are more system files corrupt..

I really really wonder why this would happen.. (I have journaling on and always use a non-admin account for my day to day activities)

Anyway, trying further..

What is the strategy if I want to restore the system files? Can I insert the Mac OS X (older version; 10.2.3 vs running .4) and have it repair succesfully? Or should I better back up my personal data and do a clean install?

Try reinstalling the Combo 10.2.4 updater found here

Hi Steve,

is there a way to install this update from the command prompt? I cannot login via the GUI anymore ("loginwindow" crashes with EXC_INVALID_ADDRESS when I enter my login data)

Thanks

I think this should do what you need:

cd /

gunzip -c /path/to/ThePackage.pkg/Contents/Archive.pax.gz | pax -r

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Hi dudes, thanks for the help so far.

For some reason I don't seem to be able to mount the Combined Update dmg file:

rez:~/combo# openssl sha1 MacOSX10.2.4CombinedUpd.dmg
SHA1(MacOSX10.2.4CombinedUpd.dmg)= 0b377141c1cd11d303a72ce3fac5170d2e02cf3b
rez:~/combo# hdiutil mount MacOSX10.2.4CombinedUpd.dmg
hdiutil attach: mounting "MacOSX10.2.4CombinedUpd.dmg" failed: no mountable file systems.
I have had this problem earlier with some dmg's. The hash is equal to that specified by Apple, so I wonder what's up...

Time to do a system repair, if there is such a thing? Reinstall maybe?

The "no mountable file systems" error now suddenly appears on mounting other dmg files as well...

I think my Mac wants to be Windows. I had to reinstall every few years on Windows, but then I usually caused it myself and knew what was wrong... I never had it wipe out files randomly

Can this be associated with journaling?

Anyone wants to buy a PowerMac G4?

archive and install. make sure to migrate users and settings. it's painless. doesn't touch the apps (some might need re-installing, maya ple for example)
then all you have to do is re-apply the updates.

before you do this have you tried booting from the jag cd and fixing permissions and the drive?

Do you have another Mac? You can use firewire target mode to access your bad drive. I have done this many times and it works great.
