Last weekend, my HDD on my 1 year and 2-3 month 12" PB failed. I don't have Applecare so I bought a new drive and fixed it myself.

The strangest thing about the situation, besides the breakdown, was that I remembered that my HDD used to make a sorta lightsaber sound if it was tilted to the side. This was the same sound that my PB was making when it failed except it was louder and didn't matter if it was tilted or not.

Now, that I installed the new HDD, no sound. I checked the 12" PBs at the Apple store, no sound.

Any thoughts on this? Anyone else get this sound? Be sure that what you are hearing is the HDD and not the fan.

If I ever heard that sound I would back up my data ASAP and get a new drive...

And no, never have heard it on my 15" rev C

I used to get that sound from my old VAIO R505. Same thing you have, it came on sometimes if the notebook was tilted to the side.
