We just got our PB back from service for this same problem, they said they re-seated the video cable and that seemed to fix it, but they warned us that they've seen this before and that if it happens again that we'll need a new board. My wife picked it up, so I don't know what board this would be? What sort of cost will this involve, I do have about 2 months left on my Applecare extended warranty, so I it'll be covered, but I'm still wondering what it would've cost if I hadn't spent the fortune on the warranty...

Hello,

It sounds like it could be the inverter board. I have replaced these in the past in cases where the backlight would fail on TiBooks. Usually not a very expensive repair and it should be covered under your extended warranty, I would imagine. A fairly low-trouble installation but still best left to an experienced portables technician in order to verify the repair.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, I plan to just take it back to the authorized repair place that reseated the cable last week, it was covered under the warranty so I assuming this new problem, the obvious real one in the first place, will be covered as well.

Talked to Apple today about this situation. They seemed quite upset that their authorized repair center didn't get it right the first time and would not authorize me to carry it back to the place. They're sending DHL delivery to pick it up and said they'd have it fixed in a week. To elaborate a bit on the issue, it's more than just a flickering, the dispaly sort of gets lines across the screen and then gets more and more gray, finally becoming unviewable... if that makes sense.

What sort of insurance was it that gave you a new and greatly upgraded PowerBook?
