For OS X, is there a way to encrypt files and folders so that you need a password to access them, like in OS 9.1?

This is one of those nice little features that never made it to X. Hopefully the next update after 10.1 will bring it back to the Mac OS.

You'll have to use a third-party app.

Be forewarned that this program will not preserve resource forks. You'll have to MacBinary or Binhex the files you wish to encrypt if they contain a resource fork. But the type of encryption this program can do is far stronger than the 40-bit elliptical encryption method that Apple's OS 9 encryption app uses.
