One has to be carefull with the "Best. Something. Ever." - tag, but I honestly believe that R.E.M. is as good as this genre of music can get.
I needed to express this just now.

"Losing my Religion" is a WONDERFUL song.
In a tangentially related story...
9.) Georgia. Two bands – the B52s and REM – are from Athens-town. The frat party scene is awesome and the city is the very essence of a Southern college town. The football team plays "tween the Hedges" (though we could do without that mascot).

Out of Time is one of my top-ten favorite records of all time. But my favorite song has got to be "Half a World Away". I kinda liked Automatic For The People but anything after that has been a disappointment to me. I think they became too self-indulgent and pretentious with their music/sound.

One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.
I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.

I hate R.E.M. I can't say what it is specifically about them, I just find their music grating.

For the "genre" I prefer 10,000 Maniacs (pre-Our Time in Eden) and The Church over REM.
I am not saying REM sucks, I am a fan.
I think Green was their best album.

REM, U2, Metallica etc etc are bands with one or two albums that matter.. which is pretty good, no doubt about it.. however they should have just stopped after making them.
Unfortunately, this did not happen. Money for nothing and chicks for free must be too good to throw away

I have liked almost all REM's music, but I think they were better in the early days when you couldn't understand what the heck they were saying.

Agreed.
For example, Jane's Addiction shouldn't have recorded their last album.
Not that it wasn't better than 90% of the crap on the radio at the time, it still stunk compared to the other 2-3 they did.

Green, Out of Time, and Automatic for the People are excellent. Are you suggesting they should have stopped *before* making those albums?
As for U2, I haven't like their newer albums on first listen, but they grow on me quite well. I think HTDAAB is very good. It's the opposite effect I see in some other bands - I like it at first, then get to where I can't stand it.

Long time REM fan, since they started to get radio play with The One I Love and Losing My Religion. Got all their albums now and I'd agree that the late 80's to early/mid 90's was their best. The newer stuff is good in its own way, but its a bit like Radiohead pre and post OK Computer, different bands with the same people (except Bill).

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

And I agree.
Jane's Addiction did a better cover and it was live.

Has anyone cared about Chinese Democracy in the last 5 years? It's currently "slated for a 2007 release."
Most expensive unreleased album ever.

No, GNR was the sum of it's parts. Not just one man.
Though "Oh my God" from the "End of Days" soundtrack was RAD.
I am biased however since Dave Navarro played on it. Same with "further down the Spiral" by NIN and a TON of other CDs no one knows he played on.

Yes, because they weren't excellent. Just mediocre on their way to absolute crap.

Most people who don't have any taste, just assume U2 is making something good. They're not. They haven't made anything worth listening to since Joshua Tree. Their music is very bad. Without inspiration, originality or an ounce of quality.
