What happened? After a battery of tests the answer was clear: Unexplained cardiac arrest. Even my health is a man of mystery.

In the short term, my mental faculties are still slightly off (personality, memory, intense thinking) and I'm wearing what essentially is a smart vest that is a defibrillator.

I mention this because:
A. I'm probably not thinking straight and will regret this later
B. I also underwent a hefty medical procedure last year, though that was planned, so I'm in some kind of weird groundhog day, only this time it's even more deadly serious.
C. I'm vaguely aware this was a near-death experience, and as such my perspective is going to be different in the short term. (That went for last year too, but in a different manner)

I don't want or need any prayers or pity, but I will accept donations in adorable cat gifs.
jesus christ, I go away for a couple of months and you think you can go an die on me? I don't think so.

seriously, I am glad you're ok - no prayers? too bad, you're getting them. best always, osiris

You know it occurs to me that, with this thing requiring 4 month check-ups, I never want to lose my job ever. Ever. That's a fair amount of stress.

Hope you never pointed your employer to this forum. You just gave them the OK for a substantial pay cut.

If you're willing to share, I'd be interested in knowing the cost of a pace-maker check-up in the US.

Wow. I'm glad it was an "interesting" experience and not something we hear about from someone else...

While I don't know how much it costs, a pacemaker check is often as simple as having the technician hold something the size of a wired mouse over your pacemaker and downloading its logs. My dad had a pacemaker/defibrillator and I got to see him get it checked once. It's the logs that tell the tale, really. They list things like how many episodes of this or that, was there an irregular rhythm, and if so how was it dealt with? What's the average, max and min heart rate? Any "additional" stimuli or unstimulated contractions? Lots of stuff like that. Analyzing the data tells the cardiologist what's going on, especially finding and identifying patterns. All this in a little box that can be as small as a couple inches across and less than half an inch thick.

EDIT:
And after I posted this, I got a banner ad at the bottom, offering American Red Cross CPR certification! Naw, Google don't care what we're chattering about...

MacKeeper and OWC here. Get a RAM upgrade for the pacemaker, and run suspect software on it. Or try the drinking, of course.

Hope your pacemaker isn't internet connected. I'm sure the NSA would be very interested in network-aware pacemakers.

I'm in no worse position now then I was during the recession when I was scared shitless. In fact, thanks to ACA, I know if I lose my job I can get some form of insurance and the ****ers can't squeeze me for having a pre-existing condition. I just wouldn't look forward to the deductibles.

A. Not a pace-maker. C'mon people.
B. No idea. For some reason I don't get an itemized list when I go to Philly, but considering I'm dealing with U Penn, I feel certain its not cheap. Not by a long shot.

How self-centered does a person have to be to enter a thread about the OP dying and complain about your arthritis? How about you post your next update in ebuddy's cancer thread. I'm sure he'd love to read about it during chemo.

Yeah, that was, like, a year ago. I should really get over it and take stock in not having arthritis. Things like forgetting metal detectors interfere with your implant are so blasé.
